FSU Football Wins Home Opener
On Thursday March 11, the Frostburg State University (FSU) Bobcats took the stage their home opening night against Wheeling University (WU). This would be the first time the FSU football has played since November 16 of 2019. Last time their season was in session they did very well for it being only their first season as division II athletics school. So far, it looks like the Bobcats will try to do their best to reach and even top what they did in 2019.
The game started with Wheeling winning the coin toss and electing to kick the ball off. After their drive started with a quick misstep in a fumble and recovery by Chad Palmer, FSU started to click in both their ground game and their through the air. On their first third down, which was a third and 17, Palmer rushed for 18 yards to start the next down sequence. The drive ended with Palmer launching a 38 yard pass to Kyle Belack for the game’s first score. FSU’s next offensive drive would lead to a score also. On Wheeling’s two yard line, Malcolm Facey was able to break through WU’s defensive line for the second touchdown of the game.
The defense of the Bobcats were very strong as well. WU was held scoreless on their first five possessions, and two out of the five resulted in FSU takeaways. There was 7 sacks on the day for the Frostburg defense. Involved in each was Dylan Culpen, Luke Freeman, Jake Broschart, Igweh Carl, Zach Strand, Leonard Scott, and Robert Horsey. One of the sacks led to a scoop and score by Ryan Shelton for a 44 yard touchdown.
It wasn’t until the very end of the second quarter that Wheeling was able to put points on the board, completing a seven yard pass for a touchdown. In the second half, as Wheeling was trying to inch closer to a comeback, scoring another touchdown in the third quarter, Frostburg scored the game sealing touchdown when Palmer scrambled into the endzone three yards away. The final score was 20-27.
Next week Frostburg is able to get revenge on a team they struggled with back in 2019. They will play Notre Dame (Ohio) on Saturday March 20, at 2 P.M.
