FSU Football’s Lead-Up to 18th Annual Regents Cup with Salisbury

Ever since DeLane Fitzgerald took over as head coach of the Frostburg State football team, he has turned the Bobcats into contenders. This season, FSU is 7-1 in NJAC play, and 8-1 overall. They are also on a 7-game winning streak, coming off a 24-6 win over Montclair State last week.
The Bobcats are looking for their first win against the rival Seagulls of Salisbury University in 13 years. Their first meeting was in 1973 and their last 17 meetings have had more incentive with the advent of the Regents Cup game. This season, Salisbury is 6-2 in NJAC play and 7-1 overall.

The Bobcats are 5-0 at home this season and hope to stay undefeated at the end of the regular season with a victory over SU. Frostburg’s only loss of the season was back on Sept. 10 at Wesley. As of right now, the Bobcats are in first place in the NJAC. If they beat SU on Saturday, and Wesley beats William Paterson, the Bobcats will earn a share of the NJAC title.

The Bobcats enter the game with the nation’s seventh-best defensive unit as they lead the NJAC by allowing just 224.9 yards per contest. They also lead in tackles for loss per game (10.2). Senior pre-season All-American defensive end William Sewell leads the NJAC, and he is seventh in the country in tackles for loss per game (2.1), and he currently leads the Bobcats with 66 total tackles. Sewell was recently named NJAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

FSU head coach Fitzgerald has been pumping his players up for this week and he says they haven’t changed how they get ready for big games. “Our guys are excited for this week,” he said. “Our coaching staff doesn’t have to do anything different to get them to play well.”

Also, in an effort to raise school spirit, the Frostburg State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be handing out Bobcat rally towels. In fact, the first 2,000 people who arrive at the main gate of Bobcat Stadium will receive one. The rally towels will feature the Frostburg logo and the date of the game against Salisbury.
