FSU Men’s Lacrosse Open Season with A Win!

On Wednesday, February 24, 2023, the Frostburg State University (FSU) Men’s Lacrosse team played their season opener against the College of Saint Rose. This was a rollercoaster ride of a game, going from thinking the FSU Bobcats would actually make the game look easy, to thinking if they don’t adjust the Golden Knights may steal this one away.

Frostburg’s opener was played at Homewood field in Baltimore, MD. So, there wasn’t exactly the home-field advantage they would want in their first game, but in the first quarter, the Bobcats acted as though they didn’t know the difference.

Frostburg scored four goals to the Golden Knights’ zero. The first score was by attacker Bubba Love. After a shot by midfielder, Tanner Donaldson was blocked, the stickball was recovered by Love; he was able to avenge Donaldson on the previous attempt.

Midfielder for FSU, Jake Bowman, scored two goals in the first. One was assisted by attacker Cole Blanche, and the other came off of a ground ball pickup.

In the second quarter, the Golden Knights showed much poise, not completely turning 180 degrees from what they were showing in the first quarter, but just applying more precision. Frostburg went from six total saves in the first quarter to only one in the second.

Saint Rose was able to tie the game with Frostburg heading into the third quarter. In the third quarter, they actually took a lead twice. FSU turned the ball over in the early minutes of the quarter and that led to Saint Rose’s assisted score. After Frostburg tied the game six to six, the Golden Knights answered immediately.

A few minutes passed before Bowman, and midfielder Justin Husle’s scores put the Bobcats up by one. Frostburg and Saint Rose each scored 3 goals in the fourth quarter. Attacker Tyler Dooley’s was the game-winner for Frostburg who won 11-10.

FSU Men’s Lacrosse advanced to 1-0 in their schedules record. It will be interesting to see if they can continue that against Lake Erie Saturday, February 25th at 7:00 pm. They weathered the Storms twice in their three meetings in the past. We’ll see if they can get their third win over the Lake Erie Storm in three years.
