FSU Track and Field Make A Big Impact at Winter Relays
On Feb. 7th and 8th, the Frostburg State University Track and Field team went to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) to compete in the Winter Relays. On both days, FSU athletes shined as not just one but many made personal records for themselves.
Day One
FSU had two throwers land at first and second place in men’s weight throwing. John Kerns threw for 17.44 meters to earn first place and a gold medal. Right behind him, Michael Belcher threw for 16.27 meters to earn second place.
In the triple jump, Jonathan Jenkins was just outside of the top five, jumping 12.82 meters.
The 4000-meter distance medley relay put the team of Jacob Rickards, Jaydon Morley, Lorenzo Wilson, and Daniel Foster in second place with a combined time of 10:53:75.
Nicholas Richardson ran for 6.99 in the men’s 60 meters, which is the fastest FSU men’s 60-meter time in over fifteen years. Clayton Washington achieved a personal best at 7.07 also in the 60 meters.
Braxton Clark achieved a personal record of 15:52.77 in the men’s 5000 meters, finishing in second place. In tenth place was Brennen Tomassoni with a time of 17:02.64, and in sixteenth place was Timothy Wolodkin with a time of 17:48.74.
In the 60 meter hurdles, Mark Vaughns ran an 8.90.
On the women’s side of things, Alyssa Mullery was able to take second place in the triple jump reaching her personal record of 10:38. Keileen Estrada was right behind her in third place, finishing with 10.03 meters. In the weight throw, Makayla Westry threw for 13.41 meters to earn her sixth place, and Alexa Bradburn threw for 10.38 to earn an eighteenth place finish. Isabel Pereira timed 24:28.71 in the 5000-meter run to earn sixteenth place.
Day Two
Eleven personal bests were achieved, and nine athletes made it into the top ten in their respective events.
In the long jump, Jenkins jumped for a personal best distance of 6.20 meters. Along with Jenkins, was Justin Dunklin and Kevon Adams, all three making into the top ten long jumpers.
Three personal records were achieved in the men’s 800 meters, by Rickards, Morley, and Devin Horseman-Guy. Rickards set a time of 2:01.1, Morley had a time of 1:59.52, and Horseman-Guy had a time of 2:04.43.
In the 3000 meter run, both Clark and Brennen Tomassoni set personal bests. Clark had a time of 9:13.69, and Tomassoni had a time of 9:54.63.
In the 4000 meter relay, Rickards, Richardson, Washington, and Morley achieved the fastest time in recent memory for FSU with a finish of 3:28.51.
Washington also had a season-best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.18.
In the mile run, Wilson and Timothy Wolodkin had their season-best times. Wolodkin with 4:55.84, and Wilson with 4:45.44.
Foster achieved his personal best in the 400 meter with 52.67.
In the women’s shot put, Westry made into second place with a distance of 9.91 meters.
Estrada gained two personal records in the 200 and 400 meter runs, timing 27.34 in the 200, and 1:02.64 in the 400.
Morgan Matthews took tenth place in the long jump, jumping for 4.46 meters, and she achieved a personal record in the 200-meter dash, timing 28.82.
The Bobcats’ next track meet will be at Kent State for the Doug Raymond National Qualifier on Feb. 15th.
