FSU’s English Department Hosts “Dramatic Reading of Stupid Song Lyrics” to Raise Funds for Relay for Life

On Monday, English majors, minors, and faculty joined together in efforts of raising funds for Relay for Life with the Dramatic Readings of Stupid Song Lyrics competition.

Relay for Life is a fundraising organization that fundraisers to support the research and funding needed to end cancer. Each year, Frostburg State University participates in fundraising and walking to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

The Dramatic Readings of Stupid Song Lyrics competition is one that requires readers to stand before an audience, choose a random song out of a hat and read the lyrics without singing them. This can be a difficult task, especially if the reader is familiar with the  song and is accustomed to singing the original version.

“Let’s have a student come and sing a song this time,” said Dr. Lutz, English professor and advisor of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honors Society.

As the event continued, more students gathered to watch the show. John Raucci, English professor and member of the English Department’s Relay for Life team rocked the crowd with his performance on the accordion.

“We had a bake sale, selling cookies, cupcakes, brownies,  and raised about one hundred dollars; then we started tossing ideas around. We considered doing a lip sync battle, similar to what Jimmy Fallon does on the “Tonight Show,” but that was difficult to organize. Kaitlyn Wharton came up with the idea of the Dramatic Reading of Stupid Song Lyrics,” said Melody Tootoonchi, English major and member of Sigma Tau Delta.

Professor Mary Ann Chapman won first place for her version of  “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Dr. Amy Armiento was runner-up with her sing-a-long of Will Smith’s “Getting’ Jiggy with it.” Allison Cline, English senior ranked in at number three with dramatic reading of “Hips Don’t Lie,” by Shakira.

“I didn’t read because I was the MC of the event and also had to collect donations. We made one hundred dollars from that event with a grand total from the bake sale event. All of the proceeds will be given to Relay For Life,” Tootoonchi stated.

Frostburg has forty-two teams and five hundred thirty participants who have raised over twenty thousand dollars.  The opening ceremony of Relay For Life will be held Friday, April 24rd at 6pm and will end at 6am the following day.  Food, and special performances by The Avengers, Omega Psi Ph,i Kappa Alpha Psi, and a host of other organizations will be provided at the main event.

Dr. Lutz, Dr. Armfield, Sigma Tau Delta, and Mr. Raucci have all been instrumental in ensuring that the English Department reached their goal of raising fifteen hundred dollars for. The department has currently made one thousand one hundred forty dollars towards Relay for Life.
