Great Opening to the Season: Baseball and Softball

The Frostburg State baseball team started its season with an 8-2 win over Bluefield State, in Bluefield West Virginia.

The game started slow with a couple of strikeouts by the Bobcats’ offense, but utility Trevor Jones opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with a home run to left field. The Bobcats go up one – zero.

That home run opened things up for the rest of the team who scored five runs in the fifth inning. Infielder Mikey Guy reached 1st base on an error by Bluefield, then outfielder Andrew Smith added to the home run count by hitting one into the right field making the score 3-0 FSU. Outfielder Danny Estrada liked the sound of the home run hits;  he went on and hit one himself. FSU is up 5-0. Infielder Randy Steen walked to first then stole second and made his way to third base after an error by Bluefield. Trevor Jones hit a single up the middle to bring Steen in and make the score 6-0 FSU.

Frostburg scored two more In the sixth and seventh inning to finish the game with an 8-2 win over Bluefield State. FSU had seven stolen bases led by Randy Steen with two. Pitcher Jacob Stretch had seven strikeouts and one hit through four innings to start off the season in the win collum.

They played Bluefield again the next day, securing a 14-8 win.

The Frostburg State University’s Softball team also started off their season with a win. They played Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina.

FSU was the first to score thanks to outfielder Sierra Sanderson’s single that led her to eventually steal home in the first inning. Barton answered with two scores in the first inning. Barton kept the bats moving through the third and fifth inning to add two more runs. Barton 4 – FSU 1.

Infielder Brianna Powell started the sixth inning with a double to center field, and pitcher/infielder Jamie Roberts did the same thing with another double to center which brought in Powell for the score. Barton 4 – FSU 2.

The seventh inning started with a single to right field by outfielder Laura Gilford. Brianna Powell got hit by a pitch which moved Gilford to second and Powell to first. Jamie Roberts reached third base after throwing errors by Barton’s infield. That brought in Powell and Gilford to tie the game at 4-4. Utility Brianna Munday singled to center and brought in Jamie Roberts. FSU comes back in the seventh inning to take the lead 5-4.

The defense made great plays in the bottom of the seventh to leave three running stranded on base and grab the win for the Bobcats. Pitcher Sydney Theobald is now 1-0 and had four strikeouts in seven innings ending Frostburg’s opening game of the season with a win.
