Greeks Unite in the 2014 Greek Games
Fraternities and sororities have been an essential part of Frostburg State University (FSU) since 1931 and are still growing strong today. This year FSU hosted its annual Greek Games on Wednesday, April 23 at the Cordts Gymnasium from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The groups were divided into three teams: blue, red and green. Each team was filled with a widespread mixture of fraternities and sororities there to support one another and represent their organization.
Some of the sororities and fraternities represented in this year’s Greek Games were Alpha Sigma Tau (AST), Delta Zeta, Phi Mu Delta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Tau Kappa Epsilon. Members of National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) were also present in this year’s competition.
Other fraternities participating in the games included Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, and Omega Psi Phi. Also present this year was the newly restated Delta Sigma Thetas.
This year’s theme was “The Hunger Games.” Each team donned “The Hunger Games” inspired clothing, donning shirts embedded with a golden mocking jay bird on the front. Each team also created carriages reminiscent of the ones seen in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” movie.
There were a variety of competitions during the games including the two-legged race, archery and dodge ball. Every team was very enthusiastic and showed true school spirit, supporting their teammates and the opposing teams.
Eric Nixon, a member of APO helped coordinate the event. In preparation for the event, Nixon said, “It took a lot of brainstorming and late night researching to see how we could convey the theme into games that represent our Greeks, that our Greeks would enjoy, and that would bring them together as a whole.”
Nixon also provided his thoughts on the games this year, stating, “In my humble opinion, I think this was the best Greek week ever. I say this because for the first time since I’ve been a Greek, it wasn’t about the games or events. It was about the unity and being a part of Greek life. This year’s victors didn’t win because they were better prepared or more athletic. This year’s victors won because they had fun, showed up, and most importantly bonded with their teammates for the sake of making more Greek connections.”
To conclude the end of the games, the blue team was named this year’s winner. It seems that the odds were unquestionably in their favor. For more information about Greek life, please visit involvement.frostburg.edu
