In Response to Jasmine’s Story

A friend texted me and said, “Stay safe on campus.” I read it with the thankfulness that comes with feeling cared for, but at the same time I was a little confused as this felt like it came out of nowhere. I texted her back with gratitude but I couldn’t help but ask what was going on. She told me that there had been an outbreak in one of the dorms. She didn’t tell me which dorm, but I was panicking. You know that feeling when you know something bad just happened even though no one said it out loud? That’s how I felt. Sweating, heart in my stomach, vision a little blurry, I was upset. My best friend, Gabriela Oramas, looked at me and said, “what happened? Are you okay?” I quickly explained what was going on as I waited for my friend to text back.
To my surprise, my friend had responded with a link to an article from TBL. How did I miss this? I read through it quickly, but I already knew it was my dorm hall that was the suspect. I saw Jasmine’s mask-covered face outside the ER in the featured photo and I was shocked to my core. I barely could get through the whole article, as I read it aloud to Gaby. We were sitting in my car, unsure of what to do.
I called my mom, she called hers, we called Brady health, they called us. It was a back and forth ping pong mess of calls. We were upset and unable to think straight. In our minds, we thought Brady health would just test us and we could get results back fairly quickly. The staff of Brady Health did their best to help us but unfortunately were unable to test us in their own facility. I was upset, but I understood. The staff expressed that they were not aware of how expensive it was to get tested off-campus. They helped find a few affordable places we could go, and I am grateful that they did their best, despite all the rules and protocols FSU has placed on their ability to handle situations like ours.
Finally, with the help of my primary care team, we made a plan and decided it would be best for us to get tested as a precaution and when awaiting results, we would quarantine in our own hotel room away from the dorms entirely. This plan was set before Jasmine had even left the dorm.
After getting tested, we left the urgent care in Frostburg, quickly packed the essentials, and drove closer to home where we would quarantine while awaiting our tests to ensure that we would not be putting our families at risk.
On the two-hour drive home, Gaby and I had calmed down quite a bit and talked about everything going on. We talked about how excited we were to be able to go back to school after being stuck away from people for so long. In the beginning, Frostburg seemed to have a very clear, set path for us. Their plans seemed to be thorough and we trusted them. We continued to trust them even as the number of students on campus dwindled. To be honest it wasn’t until Jasmine’s story broke, that we became scared.
After checking in to our room, we flipped through Twitter and TBL’s website to look for any updates. We found out that Jasmine had finally been placed in her well-deserved hotel room, but we were shocked to see the lack of statements from authoritative figures, in fact, we are still awaiting them. We stayed in our room watching movies and trying to distract ourselves from the unwinding, chaotic mess that our university has become.
Why is it that only the students seem set to communicate the things going on? Why did Jasmine have to tell her own story before it was heard? Why did FSU knowingly keep a positive student in a well-populated residence hall? Why is that dorm hall still open? Why aren’t our questions being answered? Why did Gaby and I spend Halloween trapped in a hotel room while careless students went to bars and parties throughout the night?
We receive emails that our hard work and willingness to cooperate during these hard times are appreciated, but events like these only prove that “these hard times” do not matter as long as there is still money in the pockets of FSU.
I write this article in my hotel room, my family and Gaby’s family being only moments away yet we have to be apart from them in order to keep them safe from the possibility of spreading the virus that Frostburg could not control. Looking back, maybe I acted too fast, but FSU did not act at all, leaving me to wonder if there actually is such thing as “too fast” when it comes to situations like these. In fact, when it comes to situations like these, it is actually quite unsettling that this is only because of one student whose needs were not met by the university. Imagine how many more similar situations could be occurring at this very moment because our school did not feel it was important enough to act on them or even tell us that these situations are occurring.

Unfortunately you were sucked into the abyss of false information that TBL has become. When a spike was identified, FSU took the measured response of going online for a few days to evaluate and complete tracing. The same is being done in workplaces and educational institutions across the country. Anyone with symptoms and awaiting a test result is told to quarantine. It’s unreasonable to expect a remedy from FSU when you don’t have the results. Anyone with chest pain or pressure should seek emergency medical attention. I’m glad Jasmine came to that realization. I have seen the effort made on so many fronts and have every confidence that FSU is doing everything possible to keep the campus safe. Every student was given the choice to go online or come to campus. It’s not about the money, it’s what decision you made. I made the right one.
I’m glad you still have faith that the school is not misleading you but I experienced this first hand. Jasmine was on the same floor as me, and the school left her there IN THE DORMS. Also many people are testing positive left and right as the school pretends like those tests were negative, when in reality the information from those tests have yet to be released for public records. If you stayed home how could you possibly know what is happening at this school? I have a forst hand account of the situation as it UNFOLDED BEFORE MY EYES. I really wish I could have the confidence in my school as you but unfortunately too many things have gone wrong and FSU has just shrugged their shoulders.
