Insensitive Comments from SGA Senator Surface on Twitter

Insensitive and inflammatory comments from an SGA Senator who has since been identified as Jacey Nelson surfaced on Twitter on May 29th. The comments come from tweeted screenshots of a conversation between Nelson and at least two other individuals.

Nelson comments, “Slaves came over and were sold by [their] own people,” before continuing to add “Most were Captured by their ‘friends’ and surrounding tribes.” Another inflammatory comment from Nelson said President Donald Trump has done more for African Americans than other presidents.

In response to Nelson’s comments, members of the student body initiated a petition calling on SGA to remove her as a Senator. According to a tweet from SGA, the executive board is meeting with Mr. Bill Mandicott and Dr. Artie Travis on the morning of Saturday, May 30th.

A late-night tweet from SGA shared “Please be aware, we have been made aware of outrageous comments, in which we do not support, made by a member of SGA. Actions will be taken tomorrow morning and we will keep you all updated on crucial information.”

UPDATE: As of May 30, 2020, at 10:21 AM, SGA issued a statement that Senator Jacey Nelson is “no longer associated with the FSU Student Government Association and can no longer claim any student constituency to represent.” Read the full statement here: https://twitter.com/FrostburgSGA/status/1266736379934969858.
