Karla Schoenly Named Head Athletic Trainer

On Wednesday, Director of Athletics Troy Dell announced that Karla Schoenly will now oversee Frostburg State University’s 21 varsity athletic teams as FSU’s Head Athletic Trainer.

“I’m grateful to be given this opportunity to be part of the growth of the athletic training department. With a state-of-the-art athletic training clinic, we are able to provide the best quality of care for the student-athletes,” said Schoenly.

The experienced Schoenly received her master of science in human performance degree from Frostburg State in 2001 and has been on university payroll ever since. She worked as an assistant athletic trainer from 2001 to 2008, and then as an associate athletic trainer up until her recent promotion. Schoenly was also tasked as the clinical coordinator for the athletic training program from 2004 to 2012.

As the Head Athletic Trainer, Schoenly is responsible for overseeing the rehabilitation and injury prevention processes for all 21 varsity teams, as well as supervising five assistant athletic trainers and many athletic training students. In addition to her role as an athletic trainer, Schoenly also teaches several athletic training courses, is an American Red Cross instructor, and sits as the current Capital Athletic Conference’s Sports Medicine Chair.

Former students and colleagues had nothing but praise for Schoenly.

“Karla makes sure things are done the right way, and she cares about making sure the athletes are always safe and game ready,” said Richard Kneebone, a former mentee of Schoenly and now Certified Athletic Trainer. “She is a great mentor and a great fit for the Head Athletic Trainer position,” Kneebone continued.

FSU strength and conditioning coordinator, Kyle Linhart, also spoke highly of Schoenly. “I am very excited for Karla and the direction she is taking the athletic training program,” said Linhart.

Not only known for her expertise, but also for her kindness, Schoenly peddled her bicycle an incredible 104 miles in one day to raise money for Autism last summer.

With Schoenly now as the Head Athletic Trainer, Bobcat student athletes are truly in knowledgeable and caring hands.

“The continuous support of the AT program has allowed me to develop as a professional. I want to thank the coaches, AT staff and Athletic Training Education Department for their support during this exciting transition.”
