Maryland Raises Smoking Age From 18 to 21
On Oct. 1st, 2019, the age to buy tobacco products in the state of Maryland was raised from 18 to 21. The bill includes all nicotine products, including electronic cigarettes. The change was passed by the Maryland General Assembly on April 3rd, 2019 before it was eventually signed into law by Governor Larry Hogan. Raising the age to smoke was a priority for Democratic lawmakers who cite the need to protect teenagers from the detrimental health effects of smoking. Meanwhile, some Republicans opposed the bill, labeling it “nanny state” legislation.
Sen. Michael Hoyer (R), proposed an amendment, which passed, to make an exception for Maryland residents who are 18 or older and have military identification. Sen. Justin Ready (R) said the bill is an example of “government overreach.” The American Cancer Society and JUUL Labs both supported the bill as JUUL cited their mission to end adult cigarette smoking.
Maryland is joined by neighboring state Virginia in raising the smoking age to 21 and is part of eighteen states nationally.
