Frostburg State University (FSU) welcomes a talented, new athlete to the campus this year. John R. Lowery, 19, is a sophomore, but first year as FSU student. He currently competes on the track and field team, as well as the football team.
Lowery has been throwing for 10 years and playing football for seven years. “I throw the shot put and weight in indoor track,” said Lowery, who owns the school record for the weight throw, with a toss of 15.99 meters. He also throws hammer and discus.
Lowery plays defensive end for the FSU football team. He was one of few bright spots on the Bobcat defense, making 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
His favorite hobbies are fishing, being outdoors, and working on his truck. He also likes hanging out with his friends.
“My parents support me with all of my sports. They go to every football and track meet they can make. When I was in high school and in youth sports, they would take me to all of my sporting events,” Lowery said. His brother is also a FSU student, but on the Hagerstown campus.
Sports are an integral part of Lowery’s life. He said, “Sports create a family outside of the home. All of my teammates have each other’s backs.”
When asked what advice he would give his future children about sports, he said he would tell encourage to compete. He also said, “I would encourage my kids to go to FSU because of all the upgrades being made to the athletic facilities.”
Lowery feels FSU is a great fit for him. He said, “FSU is a good place to go to school. Not too big, not too small. Also, there is a great atmosphere here.”
