Men’s Basketball off to a Blazing Start

On November 22, 2014 Frostburg State University’s men’s basketball team came to the court with a point to prove. Taking a compelling win against Randolph-Macon College with the final score of 70-58, the Bobcats soon became a team to be reckoned with.

The impressive win against the 13th ranked school, Randolph College gave not only the team but also the school a sense of confidence and pride. The Bobcat men practiced hard and when the time came, they were ready. “We came out aggressively and played great defense from the very start,” said Bobcat head coach Webb Hatch. “We created some problems with our team’s quickness and defensive play.” Randolph College had no idea what they were in for, and although they played well they were no match against the Frostburg State men’s team.

Coach Hatch proudly made his statement after the accomplishing win against Randolph-Macon College. After defeating this ranked school, the Bobcats gained a sense of confidence knowing that if they work together they can achieve greatness. This team is proving they are not ones to be overlooked.

Leading seniors Joshua Corbett, Jabari Kamau, James Peters, and Tyler Cambell are finishing out their year with a bang having led the team to four consecutive wins thus far. After a disapointing 2013-14 season with the record of 3-22, the Bobcats are playing with heart, ensuring this season will not be the same.

This years’ team (2014-15) is a very talented selection to say the least. For example, the game’s stat leaders such as Tyler Michael (Fr.), Shawn Henson (Jr.), and Jerel Carter (Jr.) helped in leading the team to victory by averaging the most points in these games. Along with these game stat leaders others like Jabari Kamau (Sr.), David Patrick (Jr.), Nick Smoot (Jr.) and more assist in leading the team to the overpowering victory.

Along with the game stat leaders and their assistants the team consists of 22 team members far from the usual normal amount of 15 players. The amount of talent on the team was too great to cut down in size so instead of losing talented players the Bobcat men now consists of a deep team ready to take on the season with full force. Although the amount of players on the team is high the bobcat men have proved how well they can work together as a team to accomplish their set goals.

These Bobcats gained a win against Waynesburg University with the score of 85-70 just before Thanksgiving break and came back and conquered two more wins against Randolph-Macon and Mary Washington.

In the most recent game, Frostburg State vs. Mary Washington, the bobcats had a victorious win on the home court of Mary Washington. The Bobcats ended the first half with a 10 point lead. The final score of the game was 72-69. Mary Washington would end up making a comeback in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

The Frostburg State men’s basketball team is already off to a better start than the previous season. Although the team has lost their first two games of the season against Bethany College (70-76) in overtime and Catholic University (39-86), they showed their determination to win by winning four consecutive games in less than 6 days apart. The team currently stands with a record of 4-2. The team’s winning streak has given them the confidence they needed. During this 4 game winning streak the team has played like a well-oiled machine and if they keep playing the way they have, then they will no doubt make some noise in the CAC this season.

The Frostburg State Men’s basketball team next game is against Christopher Newport on Dec. 6th at Bobcat Stadium.
