Men’s Lacrosse Dominant This Season
Men’s lacrosse have conquering the field since the start of the season. At press time, the team is 11-3, tied for second place in the CAC. Just two years ago, this team was 2-15, but the last two years show a dramatic improvement. Last season the team went 13-7 and with the team already winning 11 games, they are poised to finish better than they did last season.
The team has been firing on all cylinders both offensively and defensively. In their last match-up, the team held Southern Virginia to only four goals. The Bobcats on the other hand scored 24 goals in that game. Defensively, the team has been playing shut down defense. The team has not allowed more than 12 goals in a game this season. With the way the team is playing, they are sure to make some noise in when the CAC tournament starts later this month.
In the team’s game against Southern Virginia, 17 different players scored a goal. In their match-up against Wesley, seven different players scored a goal. These two games showed the team’s depth. With so many players scoring, it makes it quite difficult to defeat them. After all, almost every player is threat.
While the team as a whole is scoring high, there are a few players who stand out. A few weeks ago, Devin Colegrove was named the CAC offensive player of the week. In the two games that week, Colegrove scored five goals and had seven assists. So far in this season, Colegrove has scored 20 goals and 24 assists for a total of 44 points. Colegrove has also played in every game and started in all but one of them.
Both Spenser Love and Chris Rios are also having great seasons. Rios is second on the team in assists with 20, and he has also tallied up 12 goals for the season. Love, on the other hand, only has five assists, but he more than makes up for it with his 19 goals scored this season.
The goalkeepers for the team have all been playing at a high level, but none have played better than Taylor Haines who has played in 13 games this season, logging in more than 650 minutes in the field. Haines has saved a total of 133 goals this season. Taylor Schmitz may not have played in the most games this season, but he has produced when his number is called. In the three games he played in, Schmitz has a save percentage of .800, the highest on the team.
The team’s last two games this season are both conference games. With the team being 11-3, these games do not necessarily need to be won, but they should treat them as if the CAC tournament has already started. Their first match-up took place on April 12 against Mary Washington, a team who is at an even .500 against conference teams. Their overall record is 10-2. Their final regular season game is at home against the 5-7 St. Mary’s College Seahawks.
