Men’s Soccer Season Comes to an End in Unfortunate Double Overtime Thriller

The Frostburg State men’s soccer team got a victory in their first playoff match of the postseason against Penn State Harrisburg 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Bobcats started their CAC playoff opener off on the right foot, scoring just a minute into the match. Bobcats Carvell Akuffo knocked home the first goal of the game on a rebound given up by the Lions goalkeeper.  The game stayed very tight from that point on in the first half, as both teams recorded shots on goal, but the Bobcats went into the half with a 1-0 lead. Things continued to stay tight in the second half, until the Bobcats went up 2-0 in the 78th minute, when Penn State Harrisburg accidentally put the ball in their own goal. The Lions would respond quickly though, when less than a minute later they would finally get one past the Bobcats’ stout defense, to make things 2-1. But the Bobcats would have a response for that goal, when just 50 seconds later, Bobcats Mukar Harris would find the net, giving the Bobcats a 3-1 lead with time running out. The Lions were able to notch one more goal, but could not tie the game up in the final minutes, giving the Bobcats a 3-2 victory in the opening round of play.

The Frostburg State University men’s soccer season unfortunately came to a heartbreaking end Wednesday, Nov. 2, as the Bobcats fell to Christopher Newport 2-1 in double overtime. Both teams held on to very defensive games, as neither team allowed a goal against in the first half and for the majority of the second half. But finally, in the 79th minute, Christopher Newport was able to find a way passed the tough Bobcat defense, with a goal by Patrick Burns, which put CN up 1-0. With what looked like their season coming to an end, finally in the 85th minute, Carvell Akuffo came to the rescue, with a game tying and possible season saving goal, sending the game into overtime knotted 1-1. Both defenses remained stout, as the game remained tied 1-1 at the end of the first overtime. Finally, with just under four minutes left in double overtime, Christopher Newport connected on a goal, giving them the 2-1 victory and sealing the deal on the 2016 Frostburg State Bobcats soccer season. The Bobcats finished their season with a record of 9-10-1.
