Men’s Soccer Win Back to Back Games
Frostburg State men’s soccer had a successful week on the field, earning two wins over MEC rivals Wheeling University on Sunday, September 22nd and Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, September 25th.
In their game against Wheeling University, the Bobcat’s first goal came in the 16th minute from first-year player Addison Keja off a pass from junior Youness Benmouna. Keja played Benmouna just outside the 18, who then played the ball back into the middle of the field to find Keja again. Keja was able to control the ball, take a few touches, and find the back of the net off a left footed shot. Sophomore Jose Rodriguez scored off a pass from first year Bobby Riffle in the 35th minute. This goal came off a similar play to the first goal, as Rodriguez and Riffle played a 1-2 combination in the middle of the field to set Rodriguez up for the second goal of the match and his first of the season. The Bobcats went in to the half leading 2-0 and was outshooting their opponent 8-5. Frostburg’s next goal didn’t come until the 86th minute after first-year Grant Scibeck flicked a pass off of his head to the center of the 6-yard box. Sophomore Camillo Ortiz was able to find the ball in the middle of the box and dove to head it into the back of the goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Joel Assal finished the game with five saves to give Frostburg its third shutout of the season. After this game, Assal’s goals against average was dropped to just 0.77 through the first five games.
The men continued their conference play on Wednesday in a home match against Davis & Elkins. The first goal was in the 32nd minute when junior Derek Staines played a pass to first year Tamino Brown. Brown dribbled into the middle of the field and ripped a shot that ricocheted off a defender into the back left side of the net. This was the only goal in the first half. Frostburg scored again in the 54th and 68th minute. A free kick just outside the right corner of the 18 was called for the Bobcats that resulted in their second goal. The kick was sent to senior Blake Geatz who headed the ball to first year Lovet Cheg, who had a diving header to send the ball into the left side of the goal. First-year Gage Adam played a ball to Benmouna, who scored what would be the game winning goal, in the 68th minute. Davis & Elkins were able to find the back of the net twice, but the Bobcats held strong until the end of the game to pull out a 3-2 win. Assal made one save during the match.
Frostburg, now 3-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the MEC, play their next game Sunday, Sept. 29th as they travel to take on Notre Dame College in Ohio.
