MTV Comedians Brighten Syllabus Week
Annie Lederman and Jordan Carlos brightened up what we all know as “syllabus week” on the evening of Thursday, September 3rd. The pair of comedians are well-known for their witty inputs and hilarious comments on Girl Code and Guy Code from MTV. University Programming Council presented the two at the LUC Manicur Assembly Hall to a nearly full-house. The welcome back production allowed our noticeably diverse student population to “LOL” together after diving into a week’s worth of school work.
Annie Lederman, who has made appearances on Chelsea Lately, Grand Theft Auto V, and The Soup Investigates, opened the night with the one inevitable question for any new Frostburg visitor – “what do you even do here?” Her “broccoli and churches” perception was fairly accurate, and our crowd did not jump to shoot down that description. Annie’s assumption that we probably just “drink and f*ck” may or may not be true – you can decide for yourself. Like most university visitors, Annie was anxious to understand what popular majors Frostburg State houses. She hilariously questioned the study of Wildlife and Fisheries – taking the time to ponder on lions and previously owned pet goldfish. Annie explained that her life as a comedian took hard work and some tough times. Her career makes not only her happy, but also fulfills one of her father’s dreams. The stand-up comic is enthusiastically awaiting the premiere of her new weekly show on E! She and her co-host Julian McCullough hit the screen on September 18th at 10:30 p.m.
Jordan Carlos has been regularly seen on VH1, MTV, and in various commercials. The New York comic is also known for his CollegeHumor.com videos and impressive Barack Obama impressions. He has made appearances on ABC’s Ugly Betty, and was named Best Male Comic of the Year by Emerging Comedians of New York. Like Annie, Jordan was confused to what we do here in good ole Western Maryland. He was clearly troubled by the elevation difference between our college town and the Bronx (about 2,000 feet), and hilariously noted the impact it was having on his body. Although he believed his head could have burst, his altitude attitude made for an interesting evening. Jordan immediately complimented our highly diverse crowd, and was genuinely impressed by the various races and ethnicities entwined throughout the room. An obvious fan favorite was Jordan’s spot-on Barack Obama impression, leaving the entire audience amused.
Controversial topics remained common throughout both Annie and Jordan’s sets. Both focused primarily on race, sex, gender issues, and political views. As a student group full of observably diverse individuals, it seemed like a breath of fresh air to listen and joke openly about such sensitive subjects. Annie and Jordan spoke lightly of these topics that we, as young adults, face nearly every day.
At the end of the evening, Annie and Jordan took the stage together, and answered questions from the audience. The questions were, like the sets, shocking and off-the-wall – but still light and amusing. It became obvious that everyone who attended the show left in brighter spirits, with most still laughing and hurriedly sending Snapchat videos. The duo left a mark on our campus at a perfect time – allowing us as students to kick off the semester with fresh humor.
