NCNW Discusses Spring Semester Plans At General Body Meeting
The National Council For Negro Women has major plans for Spring semester and needs as many volunteers and members as possible.
The NCNW was founded by educator and civil rights leader Mary Mcleod Bethune in 1935. The central purpose of the organization was to empower African-American women and help them achieve human and social justice rights. Today, NCNW is affiliated with 39 other African-American organizations nationwide. FSU welcomes individuals of any race, gender or ethnicity to join the National Council For Negro Women.
“The organization was made for black women but that has changed. It’s not about race or ethnicity. It’s about uplifting our campus and community,” said Saleah Richardson, senior and president of FSU’s NCNW organization.
On Wednesday, Feb. 24, a general body meeting was held at the Lane Center, at which events and NCNW’s plans for spring semester were discussed. Richardson and a group of five other board members plan to start “Empire Watch Night,” an event where students can watch Fox’s new hit television show, Empire. “That would be fun if we could all watch it together,” said Charday Green, an FSU student who attended the meeting.
NCNW also proposed the idea of attending Sunday services at Welsh Baptist Church twice a month. “This is a really nice church. I know some of you may be skeptical because it isn’t the regular church you attend, but give it a try,” stated Richardson.
NCNW has also partnered with Relay For Life, a fundraising organization for the American Cancer Society to raise money to fight cancer. Thus far, the organization has only raised 55 dollars from a bake-sale and is in need of volunteers to help raise more funds. NCNW would also like for students to tap into their inner creativity and volunteer with creating banners and decorations for future events.
In honor of Women’s History month, the majority of NCNW’S events during March will be enlightening students about women. The first event, “Evolution of a Woman,” will be March 4 in the Compton Science Center, called Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity will be speakers at this forum as well. The details of this event are still being worked out. Following this meeting, a workshop on “Financial Health” will be held March 12 in the Lane Center. At this event, NCNW will discuss the ways in which students can maintain financial stability while in college. “Our biggest events are usually the ones covering health education, women’s empowerment, and financial empowerment,” said Richardson.
Students that would like to become a NCNW member and or volunteer with Relay For Life and other NCNW events should contact advisor, Robin Wynder, or president, Saleah Richardson.
