Netflix Original Series “On My Block”

Netflix has the internet on fire with the return of one of their hit new shows On My Block. Created by Lauren Lungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft, On My Block has returned for season two. Season one of the series introduced us to four Los Angeles teens (Ruby, Jamal, Monse, and Cesar) gearing up for their first year of high school. Preparing to start their new educational journey was the easy part. The hard part was holding together the long-term friendship that the four companions had built.

Growing up in an area full of gang violence and family drama, the four friends had banned together over the years to survive. When one of them, Monse, set out over the summer to expand her skills at writing camp, she returned to find that things weren’t as she had left them. Cesar, following in his older brother’s footsteps, had now joined the local gang. Ruby and Jamal, disagreeing with their friend’s actions, decided to part ways with Cesar. Monse’s return prompted the groups re-connection as friends.

Throughout season one, we followed Ruby on his journey of trying to accept a new family member, and Jamal who was investigating the myth of some stolen money. We also followed Monse who was attempting to aid her friends, find information on her mother, and sort out her feelings for Cesar. The biggest story came from Cesar, who was trying to navigate his way through his new life as a gang member. Though season one was filled with adventure and humor, it ended on a tragic cliff hanger.

On March 29, 2019, the creators brought the production back picking up where it had left off. Now used to their life as high schoolers, the companions are learning to deal with the fallout from their actions of the previous season. Monse and Cesar are now going public with their relationship, Ruby is learning to deal with the idea of being a victim of gun violence, and Jamal is trying to find use for his new-found wealth. Lungerich, Gonzalez, and Haft give us new adventures, new laughs, and new drama this season.
