New Georgia Voter Law Breeds Backlash
Last month, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a bill passed by the state’s Republican controlled legislature that Democratic politicians, civil rights groups, and corporations claim suppresses the right to vote, especially for marginalized groups.
The bill, S.B. 202, makes significant changes to how Georgians are able to vote. These changes include having less time to request an absentee ballot, stricter ID requirements, lack of an extension for early voting in urban counties, as well as making the offer of food or water to voters in line a criminal offense.
The Georgia N.A.A.C.P. has filed a lawsuit, claiming that the new bill represents “criminal discrimination” against Black voters. President Joe Biden in a news conference last month, called on states such as Georgia to drop what he called “new Jim Crow laws.” Republican controlled legislatures in at least 47 states have also backed similar bills that aim to curtail voting rights.
In an effort to curtail the new law, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has signed an Administrative Order that would mitigate the statewide impact on the city’s voters.
The Coca-Cola Company and Delta Airlines, both headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., have condemned the bill. “We all have a duty to protect everyone’s right to vote, and we will continue to stand up for what is right in Georgia and across the U.S.,” said James Quincey, Coca-Cola CEO and Chairman while Delta CEO Ed Bastian, in a memo to employees, called it “unacceptable.” In addition, Major League Baseball has moved this summer’s All-Star Game out of Atlanta and has relocated to Denver, Co.
The backlash has led to the possibility of a boycott of the state. Stacey Abrams, who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2018 and advocates against voter suppression, said she supports the public’s right to boycott, but fears that a boycott would hurt local businesses. Abrams also opposed the MLB’s move, but applauded their efforts to raise awareness.
State and National Republicans continue to defend the bill’s passage. In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger cited Stacey Abrams’s unwillingness to concede to Governor Kemp in 2018 and Former President Donald Trump’s own refusal after the 2020 Presidential Election as basis to address “confidence building measures.” U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said that “woke” corporations should stay out of politics despite himself benefitting from corporate cash when running for reelection.
In a press release, Former President Donald Trump urged his supporters to boycott corporations that condemned Georgia’s law. However, a picture of him meeting with former aide Stephen Miller shows that a bottle of Coca-Cola can be spotted hidden behind a telephone.
The U.S. Congress is currently deliberating national voting rights legislation. The For the People Act or H.R. 1, would make it easier to register to vote and would expand early voting nationwide. The House version passed by party line vote in March while the Senate bill’s path remains unclear.
