New SGA President Has Big Plans for Next Year
She believes that it is important for students to get involved on campus. She also believes that she has a voice that can have an impact and change the community. Her name is Katie Morgan and she is your new Student Government Association President (SGA) for the 2014-2015 academic year.
The twenty-one year old from St. Mary’s County in Southern Maryland has many creative ideas to bring the Frostburg State University (FSU) community together.
SGA develops and administers student self-government policies, provides different student services, communicates with faculty and administration and decides how the student activity fees are spent. Students can get elected to SGA and serve on the Senate and, from there, an be elected to the Executive Board. SGA encourages students to become involved in shaping the future for FSU and its students.
Morgan is excited about the incoming year and looks forward to leading SGA. Morgan said, “I love being able to be a voice for the students of Frostburg and I think that it’s great with what we are doing in the community.” She added, “I am interested in dealing with the problems of the university and being able to come together as a whole with the people that I work with.”
FSU students should be prepared for Morgan’s plans for the 2014-2015 school year. She will begin by revamping FSU Homecoming. “Homecoming should be geared towards everybody, all students and alumni,” she explained. “No event should be geared towards one organization and I am going to try to change how all the events are going to be next year, everything in general.”
Social media is also going to have a huge factor with SGA next year as well. They are going to create a Facebook page where students can keep up with current events on campus and also add their input.
Morgan desires to create a lasting impact at FSU. She said, “Students will be able to have their school back.” Morgan added, “Next year should excite students to have a voice and having a voice to make some changes.”
Some of Morgan’s friends describe her as “outgoing and sociable.” She is not afraid to put herself out there and she is a very good opportunity seeker.
Not only is Morgan the president of the SGA, but she was also initiated into the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority in spring 2012. In the organization, she held numerous executive positions. She is very active and proud to be a part of a wonderful Greek organization.
Morgan is also involved with Colleges Against Cancer, which is a community service student organization at FSU. Additionally, she just became a member of the President’s Leadership Circle, which is a very selective and prestigious group of individuals privileged with one-on-one sessions, as well as larger service trips, with FSU President Jonathan Gibralter.
When asked about how students can get involved with SGA, she explained that students should do their research about FSU and how they can make a change. She believes it is important that students are informed on what is going on at FSU.
She said, “It is important that students get involved with other organizations, as wel,l because SGA is not the only way to get involved and to make a difference.”
Morgan has many plans in store for the new semester and it appears SGA has someone determined and ready to make a change to revamp the campus. One thing is for sure: Morgan’s top priority is to represent and speak for the students who elected her.
