New York Governor Clings to Political Power
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo continues to defy calls for his resignation after several women have alleged of personal misconduct on his behalf as well as allegations pertaining to his handling of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
At least six women have come forward to claim that Governor Cuomo acted in an unprofessional manner. Lindsey Boylan, a former aide was the first to accuse the governor of harassment. In an essay posted to Medium, Ms. Boylan claimed that Gov. Cuomo had a crush on her, and at another point, sent roses to her on Valentine’s Day. She also alleged that colleagues warned her to avoid being alone with him. Another aide, Charlotte Bennett, claimed that the governor asked her questions about her sex life, and whether or not she was having sex with other men.
A recent accuser, who remains anonymous, alleges that last year, the governor summoned her to his residence under the guise of needing help with his phone. He then reached down her shirt and fondled her body.
This comes at the same time New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced a full investigation into the Cuomo administration’s handling of COVID-19 among the state’s senior citizens. The investigation alleges that the state government under-reported the death toll in numerous nursing homes, a claim supported by Fox News Meteorologist Janice Dean, who lost both in-laws to COVID-19 last year.
New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins has called for the Governor’s resignation, as has members of New York’s Congressional Delegation, including Rep. Jerry Nadler (N.Y D-10) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y. D-14). Additionally, both of New York’s U.S. Senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, have called for Cuomo’s resignation. Both chambers of New York’s legislature have voted to strip Gov. Cuomo of emergency powers as impeachment is being considered.
In a conference call to reporters on March 12, Gov. Cuomo said that there was no chance he would step down and claimed the allegations are politically motivated. “I won’t speculate about people’s possible motives, but I can tell you, as a former attorney general who has gone through this situation many times, there are often many motivations for making an allegation,” Gov. Cuomo said. He went on to say that he would let the ongoing investigations proceed while prioritizing the state’s COVID-19 response.
CNN Anchor Chris Cuomo, Governor Cuomo’s brother, has declined to report on the Governor’s scandals, citing a conflict of interest. In the height of the pandemic, Chris Cuomo’s prime time show was one of the many programs that the Governor went to tout his state’s response. The CNN host famously hosted his show from his basement after being diagnosed with the virus.
Before being elected as Governor of New York in 2010, Cuomo served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton. He then served one term as New York’s Attorney General from 2007 to 2010 under Governor Eliot Spitzer, who resigned due to a scandal of his own, followed by Governor David Paterson.
Despite recent developments, it is uncertain as to whether Gov. Cuomo will hold on to office or resign. In a Quinnipiac poll, the governor has a 45 Percent approval rating among New York voters. 55 Percent say that he should not resign but at the same time, not run for reelection next year.
