No, The University Isn’t Throwing Your Bed Away

A photograph of a dumpster near Annapolis Hall made the rounds on social media Monday, March 16. Inside the dumpster, mattresses and other furniture can be seen. The caption of the photo suggested that beds were tossed from dorm rooms whose occupants went home for spring break, and that it might have something to do with COVID-19.

Carl Crowe, Interim Dean of Students, says this is not true. He told TBL by email, “The University is not throwing student beds away. What’s being tossed are old mattresses and old furniture in the basement of Annapolis [Hall] as we make plans to convert that space into the new mailroom given Frederick’s [Hall] closing next year.”

Crowe also says that removing the beds at this time was not a good idea “considering the generalized anxiety that students are feeling right now” and that if FSU needed “to do anything like this again, we will alert the campus community in advance.”

If students have concerns, they may reach out to the Residence Life Office at rlo@frostburg.edu or (301) 687.4121.
