Notre Dame Snaps a 7 Game Winning Streak

In the clash of Mountain East Conference heavyweights and for the #1 spot, Notre Dame came out on top.

On Saturday, November 2nd, the Frostburg State University (FSU) Bobcats football team hosted the undefeated Notre Dame (Ohio) Falcons. Notre Dame has been undefeated in the regular season since last year, and that is not surprising seeing that they are 1st in MEC scoring offense and 4th in scoring defense. The Bobcats knew this, but the problem was trying to stop themselves from being another victim.

In the 1st half, FSU scored the first point. A field goal by junior kicker Jeremy Harrison put the Bobcats up 3 and by the looks of Notre Dame’s 1st possession the run game they were so accustomed to having, may not be a factor. But, the Falcons responded immediately after with a lengthy 11 play drive that ended with a 38 yard rush for a touchdown.

Notre Dame started the 2nd quarter with another long drive, and a touchdown on a 1-yard rush, making the score 14-3 Notre Dame. Two Notre Dame possessions later, an explosive touchdown run of 75 yards put the Falcons up 21-3. Meanwhile, the Bobcats offense struggled to get anything going at all. The longest drive by FSU in the 2nd quarter was 8 plays, and that ended in a punt.

In the 2nd half, Frostburg hoped to turn things around and get back into the game. The Bobcat defense showed improvement out of the half, forcing a punt. The Bobcat special teams also made a great play blocking the punt of Notre Dame and recovering it on the Falcons 25 yard line. With the great performances by the defense and special teams, the offense still had a rough time scoring, even having the ball placed for them deep on their opponent’s side of the field. The Bobcats attempted a field goal trying to get any kind of points out of the perfect field position they started in but missed the field goal, derailing the drive. A Frostburg possession later, Harrison made up for that missed field goal, making another attempt that made the score 21-6 Notre Dame.

In the 4th quarter, Notre Dame scored 2 more touchdowns both being kickoff returns to put the game out of reach. FSU finally got into the endzone, but it was clear who was going to win the game.

The final score was 35-13 Notre Dame.

Graduate quarterback Will Brunson threw for 123 yards on 11 completions. The receiving leader for the Bobcats was junior wide receiver Terrell Brown with 67 yards and 5 catches. Junior running back Gavin Lavat had 67 yards on the ground to lead the Bobcats in rushing, and on defense, senior linebacker Wayne Palmer led with 12 tackles.

The Bobcats will try to bounce back against Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday, Nov. 9th with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
