On a Binge: 5 Netflix Shows You Need To Watch
Netflix: pretty much everyone has it. It’s the tool that helps students procrastinate or relax after a hard day. Every once in a while, you’ll come across a show that you just can’t turn off. You find yourself being able to binge the first season in a day. Where did all that free time come from? You have no idea. You just know that five hours of your day are gone and you still need to finish that five page paper for your class that’s due tomorrow. Those shows tend to be the best.
While Netflix streams many shows from different networks, sometimes the most overlooked, but the best, are the Netflix Original Series. If you like weird, heart-warming, and sometimes inappropriate for TV but completely okay for the internet shows, this is the list for you. Here are five Netflix Original Series that you need to binge-watch right now.
Santa Clarita Diet
This show is a lot. It’s a mixture of comedy, gore, and drama. The show follows the Hammond family: Sheila, Joel, and Abby. They’re a normal family; Joel and Sheila are honest real estate agents. Sheila gets sick and suddenly she’s un-dead. The plot then turns to the family trying to keep things normal but also keeping Sheila fed and finding a cure. If you haven’t seen this show, you definitely need to watch it. Only if you have a strong stomach, though; there is a fair amount of gore. Only season one is available at the moment, but don’t worry – season two will begin streaming in 2018. There will be more Sheila and Joel to enjoy.
Between
Between is a thriller/drama. The series is a co-produced show by Netflix and the Canadian network City. The show follows Wiley, a young pregnant woman in the small town of Pretty Lake. Pretty Lake is struck with a virus that kills anyone over the age of 21. The town is quickly quarantined and no one is allowed to leave or enter. With the kids and young adults in charge, they try to figure out where the virus came from and how to stop it. If you like suspense and mysteries, this show is for you. There are currently two seasons available for streaming on Netflix. It can easily take up days of your life, so binge at your own risk.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
This series is an adaptation of the children’s book series of the same name. It follows the story of the orphaned Baudelaire children as told by the narrator, Lemony Snicket. The children endure a series of truly awful things, otherwise known as a series of unfortunate events. Everything seems to be somehow connected to their awful relative, Count Olaf. If you watched the movie adaptation made in 2004 or read the book series, you need to watch this show. It’ll bring you right back to your childhood. Season one is streaming on Netflix and the series has already been renewed for a second season. The first season is an adaptation of the first four books and the second season will be an adaptation of books five through nine. There are plans for a third season, which will be an adaptation of the last books in the series, 10-13. Go binge season one now because season two is set to drop in 2018.
Fuller House
If you haven’t watched this show yet, it’s time. The series is a spin-off/revival of the 90’s sitcom, Full House. Full House holds a special place in many hearts and Fuller House is often viewed as less than because of this. However, Fuller House is an amazing stand-alone show. Not only do we get to see some of our favorite Full House characters back in action, but we get new challenges and situations specific to the time we’re living in. The characters are just as clever and relatable as ever. This show should definitely be a go-to option for all Full House lovers. Seasons one through three are currently streaming on Netflix. Season three was released on Sept. 22, exactly 30 years to the day that Full House first premiered in 1987. Binge away to your heart’s content as you anxiously wait for season four.
Big Mouth
Brand new to Netflix, Big Mouth premiered on Sept. 29. The series revolves around Nick Birch, Andrew Glouberman, and their friends. The animated series is focused on teenagers struggling through puberty. The show is not necessarily for everyone as there are sexual topics and nudity. However, if you don’t mind these things, Big Mouth may be one of the best shows you’ve seen in awhile. It is completely possible to get so wrapped up in this show that you binge it in a matter of hours. The show was created by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett and is based on the teenage years of Kroll’s and Goldberg’s lives.
