Pope Francis Calls for New Laws in Support of Same Sex Marriage
In a new documentary titled, “Francesco,” Pope Francis called for the creation of new civil union laws, which he coined as “laws of civil coexistence,” to include same-sex marriages. The documentary was released on October 21 to the Rome Film Festival.
“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered,” Pope Francis said in the documentary. To date, this is the most direct statement the Pope has offered in support of LGBTQ+ relations within the Roman Catholic Church. Though before now, Po
pe Francis had expressed that he wanted LGBTQ+ members of the church to be included rather than excluded.
Though the Pope’s statement doesn’t explicitly change any of the Church’s doctrine’s, it serves as a step forward. If new laws are drafted by the Church then it could create LGBTQ+ support from the Church’s 1.3 billion followers. Likewise, it could convince countries to legalize same sex marriages entirely.
At another point in the documentary the Pope stated, “Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family, they’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.”
The Church doesn’t consider homosexuality a sin but many of its followers still frown upon it. To many of their adherants, marriage is strictly between a man and a woman and that anything else should be considered wrong, or “intrinsically immoral” as the Catechism of the Catholic Church reads.
Pope Francis believes that the term marriage is reserved for traditional relationships. However, he does believe tha
t same-sex couples should be able to be wed in civil union.
Before now, the Pope has been known to make statements encouraging homosexual relationships. One such example was when he answered, “Who am I to judge?” when asked about a supposedly gay priest on a flight.
The Pope’s latest statements serve as a ray of hope to gay members of the Catholic Church. Though nothing has been changed directly yet, they hope that it will be the start of them being fully accepted by their fellow adherants.
With his now more direct stance on the issue, it’s entirely possible that Pope Francis will seek to make more direct changes to the Church’s doctrines. In the coming years, we may see a more reformed Catholic Church.
