Preseason Projections Come Out for FSU Spring Sports
The return to play for Frostburg spring sports is underway. After getting their seasons cut short last year due to COVID-19, spring sports at Frostburg will finally get another chance to compete. Baseball, softball, men’s lacrosse, and women’s lacrosse had their preseason polls come out before their new season. Hopefully, all sports will get to compete and end up having a winning season.
Baseball was picked to be number 4 out of 6 in the North division in the Mountain East Conference. Jake McNellis said, “some factors that will influence the team will be our pitching staff. Last year we struggled in the few games we played, but this year they are looking dominant. I’m excited to be able to play a full season this year and also compete for a conference title. We are going into the season projected to place fourth in the north, but we have the talent to upset those rankings”.
Softball was also picked to be number 4 out of 6 in the North division in the Mountain East Conference. Softball will have their first game on February 27th on the road against Queens University of Charlotte.
Men’s lacrosse earned the rank of 20th in the nation after only playing 5 games in Division ll. Shawn Winans said, “the team is really excited about being ranked 20th in the nation after really showing what Frostburg Lacrosse can do last year. But we aren’t satisfied with being ranked 20th, we want to shrink that number and work our way up the polls. The factors that will influence our season are obviously COVID with being as safe as we can as a team and keeping everyone healthy moving forward. Other factors that will influence our season are the goals and destinations we’ve set as a team.” The men’s lacrosse team opens their season on February 27th at home against Walsh.
Women’s lacrosse was picked to win the Mountain East Conference this upcoming season. Shelby Brunett said, “It feels awesome! I don’t want to get too cocky, but I know if we work hard and be confident, we will live up to the expectations and win the title. I think COVID will influence our season just for having the unknown as a factor. Sometimes practice is changed an hour before and it can really affect our time management. Another factor is the cold weather and roughing out during long practices in the wind and snow. The upperclassmen are mostly used to it but the freshman still need to adapt!” Women’s lacrosse play at home against Walsh March 18th.
