President Biden Holds First News Conference
President Joe Biden held the first news conference of his Presidency on March 25 in the East Room of the White House. He addressed multiple issues, including vaccinations, immigration, voting rights, and foreign policy.
The president began the news conference updating the country on his goal of 100 million vaccine shots in 100 days. He announced a new goal of 200 million shots within 200 days, which would be by August 8. He then reported that over 100 million payments of $1,400 million stimulus checks have been deposited into people’s back accounts.
After the update on COVID-19 relief, he took questions from reporters. The first topic was about immigration. PBS Newshour’s Yamiche Alcindor asked President Biden how his administration is dealing with the surge of unaccompanied minors at the border. “The way to deal with this problem… is by putting together a bipartisan plan of over $700 million to deal with the root causes of why people are leaving.” He then explained that former President Donald Trump defunded the programs to deal with migrant surges, which led to “children in cages”.
Staying on immigration, NBC News’s Kristen Welker asked if the president would allow journalists to access migrant facilities on the border. President Biden told Welker that he will grant access as soon as possible.
Most of the news conference dealt with the surge in migrants. President Biden’s main message was, “The overwhelming majority of people coming to the border and crossing are being sent back. Tens of thousands of people who are over 18 years of age and single…have been sent back, sent home.”
CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked if the president agreed with former President Barack Obama’s statement that the filibuster was a relic of the Jim Crow era. President Biden simply answered “Yes.” Many Senate Democrats have expressed their wish to abolish the filibuster so they would only need a simple majority to pass legislation rather than 60 votes. He also condemned Republican efforts to curb voting rights, calling the efforts “un-American” and “sick.”
The president then took questions regarding foreign policy. He acknowledged the growing hostility between the U.S. and China. “I made it clear to him [Chinese President Xi Jinping] again what I’ve told him in person on several occasions: that we’re not looking for confrontation, although we know there will be steep, steep competition…we’ll have strong competition, but we’ll insist that China play by the international rules: fair competition, fair practices, fair trade.”
In addition to concerns about China, there were also concerns as to if the Pentagon would meet the May 1 deadline to withdraw from Afghanistan, ending the country’s longest war. The President admitted that the deadline would be “hard to meet” but could not imagine having troops on the ground this time next year. The War in Afghanistan formally ended in 2014, but 2,500 troops remain to assist local forces.
President Biden also addressed a question about his political future. The president, who is the oldest man to hold the office and would be 82 by the 2024 Presidential Election, announced that it was his expectation that he would run for a second term.
