Pretty Little Liars: Got A Secret, Can You Keep It

If you’re familiar with the show Pretty Little Liars you know “got a secret, can you keep it” comes from their anomalous theme song. Unfortunately, cast members and creator I. Marlene King announced on a Facebook live broadcast that the show will be coming to an end soon. The show’s most recent season finale aired Aug. 30 on Freeform, with the show returning for its final season in 2017. Of course the show will go out with a bang, airing a super-sized two hour event, hopefully providing closure for fans. The series is based on a popular book series written by Sarah Shepard.

The series follows the secretive lives of four girls. In the small town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily’s clique fall apart after the alleged murder of their supposedly close friend Allison. The girls are reunited by messages sent from a mysterious character named “A”. “A” threatens to reveal their deepest secrets that they thought only Allison knew. The main gist of the story is that Allison is still alive, although a body identified as hers was found. The girls find themselves in sticky situations that cannot be undone. Nonetheless, they will continue to do anything and everything to find “A” and put a stop to the mystery.

Since its launch in 2010 the series has more than 14 million Facebook fans and another 10 million between Twitter and Instagram. It holds the six most tweeted scripted telecast in TV history and has 36 Teen Choice Awards. It’s rated 81% on rotten tomatoes and 8.6/10 on TV.com. The show has some criticism which includes resembling a soap opera or being the Desperate Housewives for teens. Others include not being realistic with their fancy clothes, makeup, and hair. New viewers would have to decide for themselves if they agree or disagree.

The executive producer/creator, I. Marlene King, is best known for producing Pretty Little Liars. She will also be producing the upcoming series Famous in Love, staring Bella Thorne, which will first air directly after the PLL season eight finale next year. The main cast of PLL consists of Lucy Hale (Aria Montgomery), Troin Bellisaria (Spencer Hastings), Ashley Benson (Hanna Marin), Shay Mitchell (Emily Fields), and Sasha Pieterse (Allison DiLaurentis). A film is also a possibility for the show, so season eight may not be the last time we see this cast together.

There’s still time to catch up before the next season if you have time for two weeks’ worth of binge watching – seasons one through six are available on Netflix. For more like it, look to The Vampire Diaries, Once Upon A Time, Switched at Birth, and The Lying Game.
