Roell Hits Two Homers as Frostburg Ends CAC Series

The Frostburg State University (FSU) Bobcats baseball team lost two games in a double header against the St. Mary’s Seahawks. The Frostburg Bobcats are now sitting at 11-13 looking  to end their curent losing streak.

In game one, FSU scored first in the bottom of the second inning on a single by junior Quin Ambeault and run in by senior Jason Paredes. In the next inning, St. Mary’s answered with a score to have the game tied until the sixth. St. Mary’s scored four times at the top of the sixth inning to make the score 5-1 and take the lead. St. Mary’s scored two more times in the seventh. The Bobcats answered with a home run by junior Ryan Roell, and St.Mary’s had the final score winning 8-3.

In pitching, senior Chase Delost had five strikeouts, three wins, and an earned run average of one and senior Dan Ryczek had two wins with an earned run average of three. In hitting, Roell had one hit, one run, and one run batted in, junior Mitch Fyffe had one hit, and Ambeault had one hit and one run batted in. In fielding, Roell had 12 putouts with one assist, Paredes had five putouts, Fyffe had four putouts, and Ryczek had three assists.

In game two, the Seahawks picked up right where they left off, scoring two in the second inning. In the third inning, FSU made a strong case to comeback, scoring five times with runs by sophomores Bret Fogle and Tre D’Amico, Paredes, Roell, and Ambeault. St. Mary’s retaliated with seven points of their own, making the score 9-5 St. Mary’s. The Seahawks kept a steady four to five point lead from here on out, as the final score was 14-9.

In pitching, sophomore Colby Lee had three strikeouts, one win, and an earned run average of one, senior Travis Brashear had one strikeout, senior Christian Rivera had three strikeouts with an earned run average of two, and junior Nathan Engle had two wins and an earned run average of three. In hitting, D’Amico had three hits and two runs, Ambeault had two hits, one run, and two runs batted in, Fogle had two hits and one run, and Roell had one hit, two runs, and one run batted in. In fielding, Ambeault and Roell both had 11 putouts, Fogle had two putouts and three assists, and senior Nick Fuhrmann had three assists.

The final game of the series ended in a 5-5 tie on a Sunday, April 14. This result moves the Bobcats to 11-13-1 overall and 1-11-1 in the CAC. Fuhrmann led the way for the Bobcats going 4-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Fyffe finished with three RBI’s and went 3-for-4.

Frostburg will play a make-up game against Mary Washington on Wednesday, April 17 at Bob Wells Field with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
