SafeRide Vehicles Involved in Accidents, 1 Injured
Two SafeRide vehicles were involved in traffic accidents that occurred on Sept. 15 and 16. One person sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, but has since been released. According to the organization’s website, “SafeRide is a service available for FSU students requesting free transportation if they are tired, have a long distance to walk, feel unsafe, or are intoxicated.”
The first incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Sept. 15. SafeRide van 20 was stopped at the stop sign on Taylor street at the intersection of Taylor and Center street. The van entered the intersection and collided with an oncoming vehicle. “The SafeRide van sustained extensive front end damage as a result. The van’s operator was not injured, however the front passenger was complaining of knee pain and soreness,” according to FSU Police Lt. Donahue. An ambulance transported the injured passenger to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. The vehicle that collided with the van was a small passenger vehicle. “The vehicle sustained heavy damage to the driver’s door and front end. The driver and two passengers were uninjured,” Donahue said. The accident was investigated by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Department.
The second incident also occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Sept. 16. SafeRide van 15 was parked in the 7-11 parking lot on East Main street in Frostburg. The van was waiting on some individuals who requested a ride when the driver reported feeling a jolt that shook the van. The suspected vehicle that hit the van was reported to pass behind the van, fail to stop, and then begin travelling east on Main street according to Donahue. The van sustained only minor damage to the rear bumper, and no injuries were reported. The Frostburg City Police Department is still investigating this reported hit-and-run case.
