Sasu’s Big Day Helps Frostburg Defeat Shenandoah 20-10

The Frostburg State University football team improved their record to 2-0 after defeating Shenandoah 20-10. Senior running back Ben Sasu led the way scoring two touchdowns on the evening. Frostburg’s defense played outstanding as well, stopping Shenandoah on fourth down on three separate occasions.

Ben Sasu, a Montgomery County native, had a breakout game in his second time wearing a Frostburg uniform. Sasu led the team in rushing with just 11 carries for 75 yards and two crucial touchdowns that gained and maintained the led for the Frostburg who never trailed the Shenandoah Hornets. After this impressive showing, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Sasu, currently the third-string running back, does not receive a heavier workload in the run game.

The Hornets were prepared for Ken Emmon’s speed and elusiveness and stopped him from beating them on the ground, but could not stop the veteran gunslinger through the air. The ever reliable Ken Emmons had a great game throwing for 171 yards, completing 12 out of 16 attempts, and rushing for one touchdown as well. Haydan Roberts was Emmon’s favorite target on the evening as he led receivers with 85 yards on 6 receptions. Sophomore wide out Austin Bonsall also hauled in a 49 yard pass from Emmons on his only catch of the game.

Frostburg’s defense played a key role in the team’s victory over Shenandoah allowing them only one touchdown and a field goal despite yielding 402 yards of total offense. Linebackers Matt Heacock and Rowan Pinkett both had outstanding defensive performances for the Bobcats. Heacock recorded 11 tackles, a pass breakup, and an interception. Pinkett also made 11 tackles, a pass breakup, a sack, and another tackle for a loss. Defensive end William Sewell played well too making seven stops. Unfortunately for the Frostburg defense, senior defensive back Keith Smith left the game with was later determined to be a partially torn MCL. Smith will be dearly missed from the secondary as both an excellent player and as a leader.

Under the coaching of Delane Fitzgerald the Frostburg football team has enjoyed early success and looks to continue ride their momentum moving forward in the season.
