SGA Briefing 10/8/20
A Student Government Association meeting was held on October 8, 2020. Following attendance, an update was given on CAPS, the student mental health service on campus. They are now up and operating via telehealth services during regular and after hours. In addition to this, virtual support groups will be held every Friday beginning at noon.
Continuing the food option crisis on campus, it has been added to the agenda that more options for vegan and vegetarian meals will return to campus.
on Monday, 10/12/20, there will be a meeting with organizations on campus discussing the dismantlement and such of the big five dilemma discussed in previous briefings of the SGA meetings.
On the subject of old business, the resolutions discussed in previous briefings are still being debated with an amendment made to resolution 2-2020, the motion to change the requirements for president in order to make more people eligible for the position. Vice President Thayer read the amendment which, in short, means that any eligible candidate must meet with the current and Vice President to be made ready for the position. This amendment was created to ease the worries of little to no competition in the next election and having a capable, competent leader steps into the role. Other changes to the constitution involve the addition of a judicial branch to the SGA that would function as the judicial branch in the US government does, to create a system of checks and balances and ensure that members and resolutions are acting in accordance with the constitution. This resolution is known as 4-2020.
Next up for discussion was the abolition of the “Walker’s Policy”, a current piece of writing that allows students with a few courses left to walk the stage with those who graduated. The pros and cons of this are as follows:
Processing these requests adds to the workload of admin staff
- Renovations to sports venter minimized seats
- Ticket numbers reduced to four
- Is it actually fair to people who have fulfilled all their requirements (an honor that has not been earned)
What should also be considered:
It allows people to complete internships in a timely fashion
Other news includes the suspension of the ethnobotany major, movies on the lawn October 10 and 16, as well as a “healing the heart of democracy” discussion taking place on October 12 at 6 that will be discussing what’s at stake this election.
And last but certainly not least, congratulations to Ariyana of the SGA for all her hard work in her community and on campus!
