Softball Gaining Steam

The Frostburg State University softball team is making some noise this season. Currently, they sit in second place in their division with a record of 8-5. They are also undefeated in their conference going 2-0 so far. The team is playing great on their home field losing only one game so far this season. All in all, the team is firing on all cylinders, and they are expected to be in contention for the CAC title this season. Right now the team is on a three game winning streak, after beating Wesley and Stevenson.

The Bobcats started the season off slowly as they lost their first two games of the season, both against Randolph-Macon. The scores for those two games were 4-1 and 11-0. After those two games, the team went on a five game winning streak before losing their next game.

Like last season, Hannah Tavik is playing at an all-star level as she leads the team in a number of categories. Tavik leads the team in batting average with a .474. Her .474 batting average also places her third highest in the CAC. Tavik is also pitching at a high level, just like last season. Tavik’s 2.76 ERA not only leads the team, but it ranks eighth overall in the CAC. With 33 strikeouts this season, Tavik is currently sitting eighth in the conference. Tavik’s contributions this season not only show in the stat lines, but are also more evident in the team’s record. Tavik has started more games than any other player on the team this season at pitcher and she also has the most wins as well. Lastly Tavik leads the team in slugging percentage with .579.

Caitlin Lovend is producing at a high rate this season as well. Offensively, Lovend has been on a tear. Through 13 games, Lovend has hit 3 home runs. That leads the team and also puts her ninth in the CAC. She is second on the team in slugging percentage at .541. Lovend leads the team in runs scored with ten and she has spends quite a bit of time on base with a .426 on base percentage with is fourth best on the team. Opposing teams try to keep Lovend from hitting the ball. So far in the season, she has been walked eight times. With Hannah Travik’s pitching dominance and high batting average and Lovend’s offensive power, the Bobcats have a nice on tandem leading the team.

Another player who is making their presence felt is freshman Emily Zengel. Zengel is second on the team in terms of batting average and on base percentage. For the two conference games the team played, Zengel has a .667 batting average which leads the team. Zengal is a player to watch out for as the season goes on.

The team’s next three games are all conference games. Mary Washington is up next and they are as of right now undefeated in the conference at 4-0. While the game may not be considered a must win, a win against Mary Washington will certainly help as they can try and rack up some conference wins.

The Bobcats will play their next home game on April 8.
