Softball Picks Up First Win of Season

On March 1st and 2nd, Frostburg State’s softball team played in the VCU Mountain Mash in Salem, Virginia and went 1-2. Their first game was played against Pitt-Bradford and resulted in a Bobcat victory 3-6.

In the first inning of action, both Pitt-Bradford and Frostburg had runners in scoring position, but neither team could get a run. The Panthers scored two in the top of the third inning, but the Bobcats had answers in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore Kat Treff started up the rally with a walk. Senior Olivia Ford had an infield single to move Treff to second. Sophomore Aliyah Ramey hit a two-run double to right center tie the game 2-2. The next batter, first-year Amber Keene hit a single to left to score Ramey.

The Bobcats did not stop there. Junior Katelyn Mehrling walked then the next batter, sophomore Taylor McCarty, hit a homerun over the center field fence making the score 2-5. The last run scored by the Bobcats was in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomores Claire Wirth and Sam Carver both reached on throwing errors. Wirth would then score off a throwing error on Pitt’s third baseman. Frostburg won with the score of 3-6.

On Saturday March 2nd, the Bobcats played in a double header. Their first game was against Emory and Henry. The Hornets scored two runs in the top of the first. The Bobcats were scoreless until the fourth inning when Wirth walked, and Ramey hit a RBI triple to follow. The score was 6-1 Hornets at the end of 4. Frostburg lost 11-1.

Their second game of the day was played against Susquehanna in five innings. The River Hawks started swinging the bats early and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. In the third, Susquehanna scored 6 runs off of 5 hits to make the score 8-0. The Bobcats did not back down; in the bottom of the third Ford scored off of single hit by Keene, the score it now 8-1 River Hawks.

In the fourth inning, the River Hawks scored one run of off a single. In the bottom half of the inning, first- year Erica Payne singled to right to bring home Treff. Three batters later, junior Claire Hanlon singled to the shortstop scoring Payne, making the score 9-3 River Hawks. The top of the fifth inning Susquehanna scored 3 more runs to end the game with a score of 12-3.

Frostburg (1-5) returns to action on Friday March 8, at the Beach Blast at Virginia Beach against Allegheny at 2:00 p.m
