Softball Start 2-0 in Conference Play
On Wednesday, April 3, the Frostburg State’s softball team hosted Southern Virginia to open their CAC conference play.
In their CAC opener, junior Katelyn Mehrling got the start in the circle and her fifth win for the Bobcats this year. Mehrling struck out three and allowed just two earned runs in 7.0 innings. The Knights scored all three runs over the final two innings.
The Bobcats scored one run in the first, third, and fifth innings before closing out the win with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the first inning, senior Olivia Ford doubled down the left field line. Junior Claire Hanlon followed the single with a walk. Sophomore Aliyah Ramey reached on a fielder choice, which ended up being an error, and the Bobcats took the lead 1-0.
Ramey walked in the third and scored on a single from Mehrling to right. Frostburg still held the lead at 2-0. First-year Amber Keene hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, SVU’s Madison Ridgby tripled, which scored two runs. Frostburg answered as sophomore Kat Treff and Ford scored on back-to-back sacrifice flies to right for a 5-2 advantage.
The Knights plated their final run on an error by Ford in the seventh. However, the final score was 5-3.
In game two, Frostburg started with the bats early and scored five off of five hits. Hanlon, Ramey, and Keene all hit singles. They came around to score, and Mehrling hit a double. Sophomore Taylor McCarty hit an RBI single, scoring Mehrling. The Bobcats led the Knights 5-0 after the first inning.
Ramey started off the bottom of the second with a double. She came around to score when McCarty singled to left field. The Bobcats added one run to their lead. In the bottom half of the third, sophomore Sam Carver hit a single to right to start the inning. Ramey hit a single that scored Carver, making the score 7-0 Frostburg.
Frostburg ended up getting another run in the bottom of the fourth when first-year Erica Payne singled to right to score Keene. However, SVU was not done for the day. In the top of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, the Knights scored four runs off seven hits. The Bobcats scored two runs off Hanlon’s single up the middle. The final score was 8-4 Bobcats.
