Stand Up and Stand Together: Petition to Remove Campus Chick-fil-A and Starbucks
Chick-fil-A and Starbucks have always been trending, but not always for the right reasons. If you’re on Frostburg Twitter, you may have come across a petition to remove the two dining options from Frostburg State University’s Appalachian Station in the Lane University Center. In an interview with Ariyana Ward, an SGA senator and the creator of the petition, The Bottom Line found out why.
“The petition is to not only bring awareness, but to fight for the change to have Chick-fil-A and Starbucks removed from campus.” Ward notes that both Chick-fil-A and Starbucks have been the subject of immense criticism for the homophobic and racist views and actions made by both staff and upper-level executives alike. While many students boycott these places off-campus, it’s important to continue that movement on campus. She says, “a lot of students are boycotting [these businesses] off campus but don’t realize that by having a meal plan, their money has already gone to these corporations.” She says these places should not get to apologize for their actions, because they may make statements and apologies, but continue to take part in the same or similar behavior as they were before.
“Chick-fil-A has been donating money to anti-LGBTQ hate groups,” Ward says, shedding light on the actions of chief executives of the chain. After meeting with a representative from Chick-fil-A, she says they confirmed that donations were made to the anti-LGBTQ+ groups. Their justification? That these groups help kids in need by donating school supplies and other essentials.
Starbucks, on the other hand, has been facing recent backlash after making anti-black statements and not allowing employees to wear Black Lives Matter attire, but allowing Pride attire. Ward says, “Starbucks banned Black lives matter paraphernalia from being worn by their employees which their excuse for that being they did not want to pick a side. They wanted to remain neutral.” Ward strongly believes that these companies cannot just patch this up with a band-aid statement and no action. When asked if the chains stand apart from the big corporations, she said, “You can be as pro-LGBTQ as you want but at the end of the day, you are still a part of a company that is homophobic. It’s better to just not be a part of it at all.”
To replace them, Ward says Popeyes and Dunkin Donuts are popular choices among students. She said that other schools contracted with Chartwells offer the two options, so it is not a completely random choice. She also points out that Popeyes has been a strong ally in the Black Lives Matter movement.
Ward’s initiative has been met by strong support from many faculty, staff, and students. She says she has not faced as much backlash as she thought she would, and has been pleased with the amount of support she has received. As of press time, the petition has received 313 signatures.
“An apology is not enough. It’s time to start holding these companies accountable and hitting them where it hurts-the money.” She says she wants to start a domino effect. If Frostburg State University shows they won’t tolerate the actions of these corporations, maybe other schools will do the same.

With only a few hundred signatures I hope the university doesn’t cave. When did it become acceptable to demonstrate and make political statements while getting paid to work. Also, aren’t universities supposed to promote a diversity of ideas and thoughts without repercussions.
Will you please list the actions that Chick-fil-A has taken that justifies an effort to destroy their business and the jobs of their employees as opposed to the American way of tolerance for those holding different beliefs and values than you do?
Chick-fil-A does not endeavor to harm anyone yet you endeavor to harm the employees of Chick-fil-A, how does one justify imposing their will to the harm of innocent fellow citizens?
How can one be so certain of their beliefs that they take actions in order to intentionally cause harm to their fellow citizens? For me I know it is not my job to decide where my neighbor eats or works or what they believe.

Chick Fil A has actually, a number of years ago, stopped its donations to gay conversion programs. Of course I’m sure its founders are still homophobes, however the company very shrewdly viewed it as bad for business. As a result, I lifted my personal boycott against Chik Fil A. As for Starbucks, I don’t think that one is even in the corporate culture. Starbucks has really made a consorted effort to educate employees on race bias. I know these companies have some issues, however I do give credit where it is due and at least they have both actively taken steps to rectify their worst problems.
Consider greater than enterprise term loans.
