Strut or Die
On Monday May 6, the Frostburg State University (FSU) Strutters graced the stage of the Lane University Center with a wonderful performance. Since this year marked the team’s fifth year on FSU’s campus, they decided to celebrate the occasion by putting on a showcase. Full of energetic dancing and great music, the Strutters had the crowd in awe. The show was titled How to be A Strutter, and it gave the audience an intense look at what it takes to be a member of the team as well as what it means to “strut or die.”
The show began at 7:30 p.m. and was held in the Lane University Center’s ARMAH. The audience was presented with nine scenes. Each scene was based around a different quality that every aspiring Strutter must contain. Those qualities included: professionalism, confidence, synchronization, control, good performance quality, poise, energy, competitiveness, and sensuality. The show was hosted by none other than Frostburg Alum Jabari Kamau, a brother of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc.
Kamau set the scene for the ladies to grace the stage with a mixture of choreography. The scenes included elements of hip-hop, ballet, vogue, and majorette. Krysten Gutrich, former president, and Mariah Goldring, founder and former president, surprised the audience with their own performance that added the element of tap dancing. The scenes were aided by hit songs such as “Get Me Bodied” by Beyonce, “Lose Control” by Missy Elliot ft. Ciara, “Suit and Tie” by Justin Timberlake, and even a piece composed by Justin “Jus10” Alexander, an FSU alum, titled “Confidence”.
The 2018-2019 team is led by President Lauren Williams, aided by Vice President Shamese Tyler and Secretary Jala Edwards. However, they will be passing on the torch after this year, and there will be an entirely new board for the 2019-2020 school year. We here at The Bottom Line would like to congratulate the FSU Strutters on five years of excellence, as well as thank them for putting together such an amazing showcase for their fellow bobcats. We cannot wait to see what they will have in store for the 2019-2020 school year.
