Take the Saferide

Starting as a Student Government Association (SGA) initiative in 2008, Saferide is a free service to all Frostburg State students. SGA wanted to provide a safe alternative for students who are tired, feel unsafe, face a far walk ahead of them, or those who may be intoxicated.

Saferide provides free transportation on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. anywhere in Frostburg from Water Street to Grant Street. Saferide picks up from any location – homes, bars, and academic buildings. The service does not drop off students at franchises such as bars, convenience stores, and fast food locations.

While Saferide is student program, it affects the surrounding community as it keeps students who should not be driving off the roads.

President Maddie Fick said, “we are very proud that Saferide has become a quintessential part of many students’ weekends at Frostburg. We work very hard to provide safe rides for any student in any circumstance, no questions asked. We hope students take advantage of this free service we provide.”

To get a ride, students can call (301)-687-7433. Then, an operator will ask for their name, location, how many are in the vehicle, and a phone number. They will also give an estimated arrival time. Upon arrival, the Saferide driver will call to let the student know they are there.

The Saferide program is student run. Saferide offers employment opportunities for Frostburg students. The program also allows for recognized organizations of Frostburg to volunteer and earn some money.

Fick noted, “we want to thank Gianni’s for their continued support throughout the years. Giving our volunteers and employees a filling dinner really makes the difference for the night. Gianni’s is such a staple to the community and we are really grateful for all that they do.”

For the future, Saferide is in the works of bringing a “Saferide App” to campus.

To get Burg alerts about Saferide cancellations, students should text “SAFERIDE” to 79516.
