Bobcats Softball Sweeps Penn State Harrisburg

On Thursday, April 18 the Frostburg State softball team took on Penn State at Pollock Field in a double header.

The Bobcats came into this game with three wins and four losses in the CAC conference. Penn State came in with a one win and ten losses record in the conference. Pitcher Katelyn Mehrling took the win home for the Bobcats, only allowing three hits and no earned runs in seven innings pitched.

The first hit of the game did not come until the top of the fifth. Mehrling doubled and advanced to third base after the next at-bat, but she could not be brought in to score after a line out to third base.

After Mehrling’s hit, it seemed like the flood gates opened for both teams. For the next two innings, both teams were getting hits but could not get enough rallied together to be able to score.

Then, in the top of the sixth inning, Olivia Ford singled and then stole second and third base. Ford’s teammate Claire Hanlon reached on a fielders choice and brought Ford home for the first scored run of the game.

For the next two innings, the Bobcats defense did a great job holding Penn State scoreless and took the win in the first game of the double header 1-0. Ford finished with one hit and one RBI, Amber Keene finished with one hit, and Mehrling finished with one hit.

In the second game of the double header, unlike the first game both teams were hot at that bat. Frostburg racked up 15 total hits.

The top of the third inning was the best inning for the Bobcats. Carly Wirth singled up the middle, and Ford followed up with a single to left, which advanced Wirth to second base. Aliyah Ramey singled to right field, which brought Ford and Wirth in for two scored runs. The Bobcats finished the inning with three runs scored total.

Mehrling pitched seven innings and held Penn State’s offense scoreless. Ramey finished with three hits, two RBIs, and one run, Mehrling had two hits, Erica Payne two hits and three RBIs, and Taylor McCarty had two hits.

The Bobcats swept Penn State in the double header and improved there win total to 14.
