This Week in Frostburg Sports

Women’s Basketball:

The women’s basketball game on Monday, Feb. 4, against Penn State Altoona was cancelled. On Wednesday, Feb. 6, the Bobcats traveled to Middletown, Pennsylvania to take on Penn State Harrisburg. This game was a close loss for the Bobcats, losing 60-56. Points were scored by Amanda Emory, Drew Dunathan, Victoria Diggs, Megan Kelly, Kayla Wilson, and Jada Holland. Offensively, Dunathan, Emory, and Kelly earned rebounds, while Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla, with Dunathan, Emory, and Kelly all earned defensive rebounds.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the Bobcats headed to Newport News, Va. to play in a conference match up against the Christopher Newport University (CNU) Captains. This game ended in a 70-59 loss for the Bobcats. The Bobcats finished the game with Diggs scoring 27 points, Kelly scoring 7, Emory and Dunathan each scoring 6. Diggs, Tirado-Viscalla, and Emory each scored at least one free throw during the game. After this week’s games, the Bobcats’ record moves to 14-8, while being 6-6 for conference play. The next game is scheduled to be played in Bobcat Arena at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 against CAC opponent, York College.

Men’s Basketball:

The men’s basketball team also played both Penn State Harrisburg and CNU. The final score of the Penn State Harrisburg game was 86-67, with Penn State Harrisburg securing a win. Points were scored by Daniel Alexander, Terry Kenner, Lawrence Pettis, Edwin Cole, and Torrin Stephens. The final score of the CNU game was 72-64, a victory for Christopher Newport. These two games drop the Bobcat’s record to 10-13 and 6-6 in conference play. The next game will be on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. in Bobcat Arena against York College.

Track & Field:

The women’s track & field team competed at the 3rd Annual Larry Sharpe Memorial at Hagerstown Community College on Feb. 8. Frostburg had one win and nine top-10 finishes. Cameron Blake, a first-year sprinter, won the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Taja Griffin and first-year Timara Wright also ran the 200-meter dash finishing 13th and 14th respectively. Junior Sarah McCurry finished second in the mile, and the sprint medley relay made up of juniors Kenzi Smith, Sidonie Brown, Keileen Estrada, and Gabbriell Reason also finished second. Estrada also competed in the 55-meter hurdles and finished third. Senior Ashleigh Myers finished sixth in the 300-meter dash. Senior Holly Van Wie and sophomore Cassandra Vogle competed in the shot put and finished third and ninth respectively.

Tristan Barnett, a sophomore and the only male that competed at Hagerstown, finished 10th in the 200-meter dash and eighth in the 55-meter hurdles prelims.

The men’s track & field team competed at the 2019 DuCharme Invitational at Dickson on Feb. 8 earning four top-10 finishes. Matthew Warner, a first-year, placed fifth in the shot put. Sophomore Ricky Keith Powell-Graves competed in both the long jump and 200-meter dash placing seventh and 13th respectively. In the 5,000 meter run, senior Hayden Tranter finished ninth. Jack Bullen, a sophomore, finished 16th in the mile, and first-year Brandon Hill finished fifth in the 55-meter prelims, but he did not compete in the finals.

The Bobcats will compete next weekend at the CAC Championships at Christopher Newport.
