Swimming

Both the men’s and women’s swim teams competed in the CAC Championships at St. Mary’s College of Maryland from Feb. 14- 17.

The FSU women’s 800-meter freestyle relay placed third as they edged out St. Mary’s and Salisbury to take home the bronze. The relay consists of senior Emily Turner, juniors Megan Culbertson and Rebecca Marsh, and first-year Gabby Thompson. The 200-yard freestyle relay of senior Maddie Weinberger, Marsh, Culbertson, and junior Elizabeth DeMonte swam to fourth place. Culberston took 16th in the 200-yard IM. Marsh placed 10th in the B final of the 500-yard freestyle. First-year Rebecca Proctor placed 16th in the 50 freestyle.

Senior Maddie Weinberger swam to a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke earning herself All-CAC Second Team honors. DeMonte placed third in the 100-yard butterfly. Weinberger, Turner, DeMonte, and Marsh finished third in the 400-yard medley relay. Turner took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and 15th in the 200-yard freestyle while Marsh finished 11th. Thompson swam to a 13th place finish in the 400-yard IM.

The men’s 200-yard medley relay made up of sophomores Luke Holloway and Anthony Giuseppetti and first-years Adam Stein and Cameron Edwards placed fifth. The 800-yard freestyle placed fifth with the efforts of Holloway, Giuseppetti, Stein, and sophomore Brady Peterson. The 200 relay team of Edwards, first-year Luke Russell, junior Matt Whelan, and sophomore Doug Goodell swam to fifth place. Giuseppetti swam to eighth place in the A final of the 500-yard freestyle. Stein placed 11th in the B final of the 500-yard freestyle and sophomore Sawyer Conklin took home 13th. Holloway earn All-CAC Second Team honors as he swam to second place in the 50-yard freestyle, missing the school record by .07 seconds.

Giuseppetti, Holloway, Russell and Peterson took fifth in the 400-yard medley relay. Giuseppetti finished ninth in the 100-yard backstroke. Peterson, Edwards, and Whelan captured 10th, 13th, and 16th in the 100-yard butterfly, respectively.

Indoor Track & Field

Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the 2019 CAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Christopher Newport University.

The women’s track and field team took home top marks in first day of the championships. Senior Holly Van Wie earned sixth in the weight throw, and junior Kierstin Tawney placed 10th.  Juniors Sidonie Brown, Keileen Estrada, Sarah McCurry, and Mackenzie Smith ran to sixth place in the distance medley relay. McCurry finished 16th in the 5,000 meter run.

The Bobcat women’s indoor track and field team finished seventh at the CAC indoor championships. Sophomore Maddison Watson finished ninth in the 400-meter dash and 11th in the 200-meter dash. Estrada placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles while Brown earned 13th in the 800-meter dash. The 4×400 meter relay of Smith, Estrada, Brown, and McCurry finished sixth.

The men’s track and field team took home three first place finishes on day one of the championship meet. The distance medley team of first-year Demetrius Sims, sophomore Colin Flynn, junior Jacob Rickards, and senior Robbie Romano ran to first place and set a CAC Indoor Championship record with a time of 10:28:41. Senior Shamar Nelson earned First-Team CAC honors after winning the long jump. Junior Kevon Adams finished sixth in the long jump. Junior John Kerns took home the title in the weight throw and earned a spot on the All-CAC First Team. Juniors Micheal Belcher and Gregory Whetstone placed fourth and 10th, respectively in the weight throw. First-year Justin Dunklin placed sixth in the high jump and sophomore Braxton Clark placed 11th in the 5,000 meter run.

The men’s indoor track and field team placed fifth at the CAC championships. Nelson earned All-CAC first team honors as he won the 60-meter run during day two of the meet. Romano placed second in the mile run and fifth in the 3,000 meter run. Senior Christian Healey placed third in the triple jump. Senior Matthew Robinson placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, with teammates Dunklin and senior Bradley Forester finishing fifth and seventh respectively. Sophomore Clayton Washington competed in the 200 and 400-meter dashes and earned 12th and 10th respectively. Kerns placed sixth in shot put and teammates Whetstone and Belcher finished eighth and ninth.  The 4×400 meter relay of Robinson, Washington, Sims, and junior Tyriek Charles placed sixth.

Both the men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will travel to compete next Sunday, Feb. 24 at George Mason.

Women’s Basketball

Women’s basketball won 56-44 against conference rival York College on Thursday. Junior Amanda Emory finished with 25 points, senior Megan Kelly scored 12 points, and junior Victoria Yoder had 6 points. Junior Tori Diggs had 7 points on the evening as she was the 19th player in the history of the program to reach 1,000 points.

Frostburg hosted in-state rival Salisbury on Saturday, Feb. 16 with third-place on the line. Senior recognition took place prior to tip-off as Megan Kelly and Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla were acknowledged. FSU dropped the regular season finale 51-47. Diggs lead the Bobcats with 18 points, Tirado-Viscalla finished with a season high of 10 points, Emory had 9 points, and Kelly had 7 points. The Bobcats could never take the lead from the Sea Gulls but got within three points six different times in the game.

The Bobcats will travel to Mary Washington to take on the Eagles in the first round of the CAC Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Men’s Basketball 

The men’s basketball team also played York, but unfortunately did not earn a victory. The final score was 67-82. Juniors Lawrence Pettis and Demetrich Williams and senior Zachary Coalman ended the evening with seven points. Senior Edwin Cole ended the evening in double-digits with 21 points on the night. A two-handed dunk in the fourth quarter, put Cole as the 20th player in the 77-year history of the program to reach 1,000 points.

FSU hosted rivals Salisbury in the Saturday CAC match-up. The men’s team honored seniors Edwin Cole, Desmond Lighty, and Zachary Coalmon before tip-off. Sherell Morton-Bey, a senior on the cheerleading team, was also recognized. The Bobcats fell 90-83 to the Sea Gulls moving them to 10-15 overall and 6-8 in conference play putting FSU fifth in the CAC. Juniors Daniel Alexander and Lawrence Pettis Jr. put up 24 points apiece. Junior Jordan Dawson finished with 12 points, and Cole had 8 points.

The Bobcats will travel to Salisbury on Tuesday, Feb. 24 for an 8 p.m. tip-off in the first round of the CAC tournament.

Baseball

The baseball team was in Fayetteville, North Carolina as the Bobcats played in a season-opening header against Wesley Wolverines. FSU swept the series beating the Wolverines 7-0 and 12-2.

In game one, sophomore Colby Lee struck out five of the six batters he faced and had a perfect third inning. Lee finished the game allowing only two hits, one walk, and  striking out seven to earn the win. The Bobcats opened the scoring in the second inning as sophomore outfielder Josh Clegg hit a double to left field. Two batters later, sophomore Tre D’Amico drove in a run of his own. D’Amico would end the game driving in three runs. Junior Ryan Roell hit a home run to open the third. Roell ended the game 3-3 at bat.

In game two, it took the Bobcats only until the second inning to take a 9-0 lead as they drove in seven runs. Senior Jason Paredes hit a three-run homer in the seven run burst. He ended the game driving home five runs. Junior Caleb Smith earned the win on the mound as he allowed eight hits, two walks, and struck out six.

The Bobcats will travel back to North Carolina to take on New Rochelle Friday, Feb. 22 at 12 p.m.

Softball

The softball team also traveled to North Carolina over the weekend to play in the Randolph Salem Invitational.

After being delayed due to weather, FSU dropped their first two games losing 14-6 to Brandeis and 10-4 to Randolph on Saturday, Feb. 16.

The Bobcats fell to Shenandoah 11-9 on Sunday, Feb. 17. Sophomores Taylor McCarty and Sam Carver each hit single home runs in the first inning. Five runs were added in the second inning to push the lead to 7-0. SU came back in the fourth inning with 9 runs to take the lead. Frostburg will travel to Salem, VA next week to compete in the VCU Mountain Blast.

Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse 

Both the lacrosse teams concluded their preseason over the weekend. The men’s lacrosse team played two scrimmages two weekends ago and played again this weekend. The women’s lacrosse team also had a scrimmage against Lebanon Valley College over the weekend. The women host Randolph Macon College on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. The men will travel on Wednesday, Feb. 27 to Lebanon Valley.
