This Week in Frostburg Sports

Women’s Soccer:

The Bobcats came home on Wednesday, October 3 after facing a 2-0 loss against the Catholic University Cardinals on their home field in Washington, D.C. The bright side of this game was that first-year goalkeeper Stephanie Vigezzi tallied 13 saves in her first career start as a Bobcat. Their second game of the week resulted in a 2-1 loss for the Bobcats against number 21 ranked team, Christopher Newport. Sophomore Danielle McClain scored the only goal for the Bobcats on Saturday. Vigezzi registered 9 saves in the loss. This moves the Bobcats to 1-1 in CAC conference play.  The next game is on Wednesday, October 10 at Mary Washington.

Field Hockey:

The Bobcats took on the 19th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College Presidents on Wednesday, October 3. Junior goalkeeper Sierra Smizer faced 16 shots in the contest, making 9 saves. Despite the Bobcats’ defense best effort, the Presidents finished the game with a 6-0 shutout. In the second half, four different Bobcats took shots on goal (sophomore Sam Coffey, junior Logan Gladden, and seniors Holly Van Wie and Sam Schaffer); all of which were, unfortunately, saved by Presidents sophomore goalkeeper, Rena Israel. Their second game of the week resulted in a 0-6 loss for the Bobcats against the number 8 ranked team, Salisbury University on Saturday. Smizer tallied a career-high of 25 saves. Gladden registered the Bobcats lone shot on goal. Their next game is on Tuesday, October 9 against Hood College in Bobcat Stadium at 4:30 pm.

Men’s Soccer:

The Bobcats successfully earned a 1-0 win against Christopher Newport on Saturday evening. The only goal was scored by junior Blake Geatz. First-year goalkeeper Joel Assad had 9 saves in the shutout. This moves the Bobcats to 1-1 in CAC conference play. The next game for the Bobcats is on Wednesday, October 10 as they take on Mary Washington in Bobcat Stadium at 6 pm.

Volleyball:

The Bobcats traveled to Rowan over the weekend to play Rowan, Scranton, and Eastern in the Rowan Quad. On Friday, the Rowan match favored the Bobcats, with them winning 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-12). On Saturday, the Scranton match ended in a 0-3 loss for the Bobcats (20-25, 20-25, 14-25). The Eastern match ended in a 2-3 loss for the Bobcats (15-25, 25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 11-15). The next match will be on Wednesday, October 10 at Stevenson University.

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country:

The men’s cross country team placed 8th out of 25 participating teams at the DeSales Invitational. The women’s team placed 20th out of 25 participating teams. The next race for both the men and women will be the Roaring Lions Invitational at Penn State-Fayette on Saturday, October 13.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis:

The tennis match for Saturday, October 6 against Juniata was postponed.

Football:

For the first time since 2003, Frostburg’s football team (ranked number 5) managed to beat Wesley College (ranked number 6). This is an incredible moment for the football team and everyone involved. The final score of the game was 35-34, with the Bobcats bringing home the victory. Senior Connor Cox finished with two touchdowns, senior Jamaal Morant had 30 carries on 162 yards and scored a touchdown, and sophomores Christian Thornton and Lincoln Ikwubuo each had one touchdown to round out the scoring for the Bobcats. Sophomore Avery Thurman had nine tackles in the win while junior Daniel Ezeagwu had eight and both junior Vincent Persichetti and senior Dre’Quan Reed posted seven.  The Bobcats move to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in NJAC conference play. Morant was named NJAC Offensive Player of the Week and first-year linebacker Diron Accoo was named Defensive Rookie of tge Week in the conference. The next game is an NJAC conference game against William Paterson on Saturday, October 13 at Bobcat Stadium.
