This Week in Frostburg Sports

Field Hockey:

Frostburg hosted Hood College on Tuesday, Oct. 9 from a nonconference match up. The Bobcats shut out the Blazers 4-0 in Bobcat Stadium. Sophomore Sam Coffey now leads the team with 6 goals on the season and 14 points. Coffey scored two of the four goals against Hood. The other two goals were scored by senior Holly Van Wie, assisted by Coffey, and senior Cara Morrell, assisted by senior Sam Schaffer. On Sunday, the field hockey team honored this year’s senior class prior to the start of their CAC conference game against St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The Bobcats fell 3-1 to the Seahawks. The senior class includes midfielder Ashleigh Myers, forwards Holly Van Wie, Molly Pickard, and Samantha Schaffer, and defender Cara Morrell.

Women’s Soccer:

The Bobcats travelled to Fredericksburg, Va. to play Capital Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington University in a key conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 10. The Bobcats took 8 shots on the afternoon, with only 2 on goal, while the Eagles took 18 shots, with 6 on goal. Senior goalkeeper Rhianna Lapen made three saves. Mary Washington won the game 3-0. On Saturday, the Bobcats earned a CAC tie, in double overtime, against St. Mary’s College of Maryland. There was time before the game to highlight the team’s outstanding senior class: goalkeepers Emily Faust and Rhianna Lapen, midfielder Melissa Krofcheck, forwards Hailey Turney, Kelly Richards, and Danielle Ferris, and defender Anais Ventura.

Men’s Soccer:

The Bobcats fell to 8th-ranked Mary Washington on Wednesday night in Bobcat Stadium with a 0-2 loss. No goals for either team were scored in the first half. First-year goalkeeper Joel Assal made several key saves throughout the game, making a game total of four saves. On Saturday, like their female counterparts, the men’s soccer team also earned a CAC tie against St. Mary’s College of Maryland on their senior day. The seniors honored before the game were defenders Christian Deynes, Haven Mackie, Willie Jefferson, and Brett Basham, and midfielder Alferid Kemal.

Volleyball:

The Bobcats travelled to Stevenson University to play against the Mustangs on Wednesday night. Stevenson took the match in 3 sets (25-11, 25-21, 25-16), resulting in a 0-3 loss for the Bobcats. Junior Biamba Tshitenge led with 6 kills, 1 block, and 1 ace; first-year Alyssa Barkdoll and junior Bailey Godlove had 5 kills each, and junior Katie Onyundo had 4 kills and 1 block. Junior Cori Smothers led with 15 digs, first-year Haley Altemus had 11, and juniors Kathryn Lough and Hannah Brown each had 3. Over the weekend, Frostburg hosted CAC rival York College and University of Pittsburgh Bradford. The first game of the weekend was between Frostburg and York, with Frostburg sweeping the match in 3 sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-21). The second game was between York and Pitt-Bradford (York won 3-1). The final match was Frostburg versus Pitt-Bradford, resulting in Frostburg winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 27-25).

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country:

The men and women both ran at the Roaring Lions Invitational over the weekend at Penn-State Fayette. The men finished in first place out of seven participating teams. Senior Robbie Romano came in first place out of 75 runners for the men, with a time of 25:59.4. This is his fourth first place finish of his senior season. For the women, helping them to a fourth place finish out of six teams, junior Sarah McCurry finished third overall with a time of 25:34.4. On Oct. 27, the Bobcats are traveling to run in the CAC Championships hosted by Southern Virginia University.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming:

Both the men and women’s swim teams won their overall meets this weekend, when Gallaudet University came to Frostburg. The men earned 143 points, while Gallaudet’s men only earned 90. On the women’s side, Frostburg scored 170 points to Gallaudet’s women only earning 62. There is another home meet at Frostburg’s pool on Oct. 20 against Goucher College starting at 2 p.m.  

Football:

The Bobcats earned a 56-0 win against NJAC rival William Patterson on Saturday afternoon. This moves the Bobcats to 5-0 on the season, being 4-0 in the NJAC. The next game is away on Oct. 20 against Montclair State in New Jersey.
