This Week in Frostburg Sports

Field Hockey:

On Tuesday’s CAC conference match up against the Mary Washington University Eagles, the Bobcats fell short, only able to score one goal to Mary Washington’s three goals. The goal was credited to senior Molly Pickard, with an assist from classmate Holly Van Wie. On the defensive end, junior Sierra Smizer registered an impressive 17 saves when faced with a total of 20 shots for the duration of the game.

The Bobcats took the field again on Wednesday to face the McDaniel College Green Terror. Sophomore Gabby Rachuba scored the first goal for the Bobcats. The game ended with two additional overtime periods. Senior Holly Van Wie scored the goal that sent the Bobcats into double overtime. With exceptional offensive play from the Bobcats, the Green Terror outscored 3-2. The Bobcats hit the road for the third game of the week on Saturday, when they traveled to (14th-ranked) CAC opponent Christopher Newport University. After facing a 5-0 loss to the CNU Captains, Frostburg’s record falls to 2-14 for the season so far. Smizer made 16 saves on Saturday, and first-year Taylor Hackett earned her first defensive save of the season.

There are two regular season games left for the Bobcats. On Oct. 23, they will travel to Shenandoah for a nonconference match up, and on Oct. 25, York College will come to Bobcat Stadium for the last CAC regular season game on the schedule. The CAC playoffs are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28.

Women’s Soccer:

The Bobcats shut out CAC opponent Southern Virginia University for a 4-0 win on Wednesday. Goals were scored by senior Melissa Krofcheck and junior Jesse Dunagan scored a hat trick. Junior Brooke Shehade gave out three assists for the game, while senior Hailey Turney handed out one assist. Krofcheck scored her first goal of the season in this game, helping the Bobcats score a season high of four goals.

On Saturday, the Bobcats faced off against another CAC opponent, York College. The 2-0 loss moves the Bobcats to 4-10-1 overall for the season. Shehade had two shots on goal for the afternoon, while defensively, senior goalkeeper Rhianna Lapen registered four saves. On Oct. 24, the Bobcats will play their last CAC regular season game against Penn State Harrisburg. The first round of the CAC tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27.

Men’s Soccer:

On Wednesday, the Bobcats hosted CAC opponent Southern Virginia University for a conference game. Four different Bobcats attributed points to help the Bobcats earn an 8-0 win against SVU. Senior Alferid Kemal and sophomore Andre Lakanu each scored three goals, sophomore Randy Putnam scored two goals and handed out one assist, and first-year Kaps Kapende gave two assists. First-year goalkeepers Joal Assal and Luke Sweeney each played 45 minutes in goal for the win.

Like their female counterparts, the men’s soccer team also travelled to York College on Saturday for a CAC conference match up. After winning against the Spartans 1-0 on Saturday, the Bobcats record moves to 6-8-2. Senior Brett Basham scored his second goal of the season, after scoring the only goal of the game. The next game will take place on Oct. 24 against Penn State Harrisburg for the final CAC regular season contest for the Bobcats.

Volleyball:

The Bobcats had a close match on Wednesday against Southern Virginia University. Unfortunately, SVU won in three sets (20-25, 23-25, 20-25). The junior class had an outstanding performance with Ashante Corey-Bey leading for the Bobcats with 8 kills, Katie Onyundo leading with 27 assists, and Cori Smothers dominating with 18 digs for the afternoon.

On Saturday, the Bobcats played five sets against CAC opponent St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The Bobcats went back and fourth with the Seahawks each winning two sets before the fifth, and final, deciding match. The first match went to the Seahawks 25-23, until the Bobcats tied it up again in the second (25-18). The third went to the Seahawks again (25-23), and the Bobcats won the fourth to tie it for a second time (25-18). The fifth match went to the Seahawks (15-10) to send the Bobcats home with a 2-3 conference defeat, moving their record to 9-20 for the season. The next match will take place on Frostburg’s home court on Oct. 24 against Penn Sate Harrisburg.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming:

The men and the women both captured wins in the pool over the weekend. The men won their meet with a total score of 165 points, while opponent Goucher College scored 81. For the women, the Bobcats earned 173 points and Goucher scored 86. The 400-meter relay team of seniors Emily Turner, Maddie Weinberger, junior Elizabeth Demonte, and first-year Haley Benedictis broke a school record with a time of 4:45.22. Sophomore Connor Gioffreda also broke a United States Paralympic record in the 200-meter Individual Medley with a time of 3:15.17. The next swim meet will take place at Mary Washington University against both Mary Washington and Hollins University (Roanoke, Virginia).

Football:

The Bobcats won 24-17 against NJAC conference opponent Montclair State on Saturday. While Montclair took an early lead, the Bobcats rallied in the second half to come up for the win. For homecoming next weekend, the Bobcats host Southern Virginia University for one of the last games of the regular season. On Nov. 3, they’ll travel to Kean University in Union, N.J. Lastly, on Nov. 11, the Bobcats will host rival school Salisbury University for the last regular season game, as well as senior day for this year’s senior class: Connor Cox, Jamaal Morant, Dre’Quan Reed, Sergio Andino, Boakum Vital, Anthony Taylor, Vincent Fields, Grayson Boyce, O’Shane McCall, Riley Hartman, Joey Powell, and Noah Teeter.
