This Week in Frostburg Sports

Field Hockey:

The Bobcats played their last two games of the regular season this past week, on Tuesday (Oct. 23) against Shenandoah and on Thursday (Oct. 25) against CAC opponent, York College. The Shenandoah game resulted in a 0-3 loss for FSU. Despite the results, junior goalkeeper Sierra Smizer made her third highest save count in the game with sixteen saves. The York game ended in a 1-6 loss for the Bobcats at home, with senior Ashleigh Myers scoring the only goal of the game. This moved the Bobcats to 2-16 overall for the season. Smizer made thirteen saves during the game. The first round of the CAC tournament for field hockey took place on Sunday, Oct. 28, as the Bobcats traveled to third place Christopher Newport University (CNU). The Bobcats fell 7-0 to the Captains. Smizer had 10 saves on the afternoon.

Women’s Soccer:

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, the Bobcats earned a 1-0 win against Penn State Harrisburg, earning them a spot in the CAC tournament. Junior Brooke Shehade scored the only goal of the game, helping push the Bobcats to 5-11-1 regular season play. On Saturday, Oct. 27, the Bobcats hosted the #5 seed in the CAC tournament, Salisbury University. The game went into overtime, resulting in a close 2-3 loss. The two goals for the Bobcats were scored by first-year Audra Curtin and junior Jesse Dunagan. Senior goalkeeper Rhianna Lapen made seven saves.

Men’s Soccer:

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, the Bobcats went into double overtime to earn a 1-1 tie against Penn State Harrisburg. This game earned them a home game for the first round of the CAC playoffs, against fifth seed York College. The playoff game resulted in a 3-1 win for the Bobcats. The three goals in the playoff game were scored by first-year Trevor Namie, scoring his first collegiate goal, sophomore Mo Odolla, and senior Brett Basham, who scored his third goal of the season and his second against York. The Bobcats will travel to play the #1 seed, Mary Washington, in the CAC semifinals Wednesday, Oct. 31st.

Volleyball:

The Bobcats earned a CAC win against Penn State Harrisburg at home on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The game resulted in 3-1 win (24-26, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18). The Bobcats hosted CAC opponent Salisbury University, Clarkson University, and SUNY Geneseo in the Frostburg Quad over the weekend. The Friday night Salisbury match on Oct. 26 resulted in a 2-3 loss for the Bobcats (21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 10-15). The Saturday match against Clarkson on Oct. 27 resulted in a 3-1 win (25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23). The final match of the Frostburg Quad ended in a 0-3 loss against SUNY Geneseo (16-25, 18-25, 17-25).

Men’s and Women’s Swimming:

Both the men’s and women’s swim teams traveled to Fredericksburg, Virginia to swim against Mary Washington University (MWU). The women also competed against Hollins University (HU) in Roanoke, Virginia. Both the men and women suffered losses against MWU. The men lost 56 points to MWU’s 205, while the women lost 75 points to MWU’s 174 points. However, the women earned a win against HU 156-74. Both teams were supposed to swim at the Chatham Invitational at Chatham University in Pittsburgh on Saturday, but the event was cancelled.

Football:

Over homecoming weekend, the Bobcats earned another NJAC conference win against Southern Virginia University in Bobcat Stadium. The 61-7 win moves the Bobcats to 7-0 undefeated for the season. Senior quarterback Conner Cox was named the NJAC offensive player of the week. On Nov. 3, the Bobcats will travel to play Kean in Union, New Jersey. The following week will be the last game in regular conference play, as well as senior night, at home in Bobcat Stadium against Salisbury University.

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country:

The men and women both ran in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship meet at Southern Virginia University (SVU) over the weekend. The men finished in sixth place out of eight participating teams, while the women finished in seventh place out of eight participating teams. Senior Robbie Romano came in first place for the Bobcats and placed fifth overall. Junior Sarah McCurry came in first place for the Bobcats as well and 26th place for the women. The Bobcats will run again at the NCAA Mideast Regionals on Nov. 10 at DeSales University.
