Van Wie Sets a New School Record
Both FSU men’s and women’s track teams competed at home in the Bobcat Invitational hosted at Frostburg State University on Saturday, April 6th.
The women’s track and field team picked up four individual wins. Sophomore Madison Watson led with two victories in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Senior Holly Van Wie took a win and re-set her own school record in hammer throw with 43.95 meters. Van Wie also finished fifth place in both discus and shot put. Junior Gabbriell Reason took first place in the 100-meter dash. First-year Amy Trembly finished second in the high jump and third in the pole vault.
On the men’s track and field side, the team picked up 11 individual wins. Sophomore Clayton Washington won in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Senior Shamar Nelson took first-place in the 100-meter dash and long jump. First-year Ratez Mclaurin and senior Christian Healey both combined for the top overall spot in the triple jump. The men’s throwing took over the events, winning in shot put, hammer throw, discus, and javelin. Junior John Kerns took first in the shot-put, throwing 13.24 meters, and hammer throw, throwing 49.45 meters, with junior Michael Blecher coming up behind. Blecher won first place in discus, tossing 44.85 meters. Junior Gregory Whetstone also competed in shot put and hammer throw, finishing in fourth place. First-year Matthew Warner finished at fourth-place, showing in the discus. Junior James Naill took first in javelin, throwing 50.95 meters. Senior Matthew Whitley won in the 5000-meter run. The top 4×400-meter relay grouping of junior Tyriek Charles, Robinson, Rickards, and Washington placed second.
The Bobcat track & field teams will compete again this upcoming Thursday through Saturday at the Falcon Invitational hosted by Messiah College.
