Ward and Ruppert Combine for Eight Goals in Win Over Southern Virginia
The Frostburg State University (FSU) men’s lacrosse team (8-7) had a .500 week, winning on Wednesday over Southern Virginia University (SVU) and losing to Saint Mary’s College of Maryland on Saturday.
Wednesday’s road win over SVU got the Bobcats back on track, ending a five-game losing streak. FSU’s first win in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) was a high scoring affair, with the two teams combining for 37 goals. The Bobcats came out on top in a 21-16 victory, and had 12 players score a goal in their highest scoring game of the season. Junior attack Paul Ruppert and first-year midfielder Matthew Ward were a force, scoring four goals each. Ward also added two assists. Zach Danneman had a game high five goals, and goalie Ian Arave had 22 saves for the Knights.
FSU’s best stretch came in the first half when they went on an 8-2 scoring run in the first and second quarters. The Bobcats scored five or more goals in three of four quarters, only being outscored in the fourth. They also gave themselves plenty of opportunities, getting off a whopping 58 shots.
The Bobcats lost Saturday’s game at St. Mary’s 13-5. The Seahawks (10-6) did most of their damage in the first and third quarters, when they scored 11 of their 13 goals. They were led in scoring by Abe Hubbard, who scored five goals in the contest.
Despite the loss, the Bobcats had a balanced scoring attack with their five goals coming from five different players. Goalie Jack Marks led the game with 17 saves.
The Bobcats are now 8-7 on the season and have a 1-4 conference record. The Bobcats will play their final game of the regular season on Wednesday, April 24 against Mary Washington. Mary Washington is currently 7-9 and will be FSU’s final opponent before the CAC Tournament begins the following Saturday. If FSU wins Saturday’s game, it will mark the seventh consecutive season the Bobcats have finished the regular season with a winning record. The opening face-off for the game versus Mary Washington is set for 4 p.m. in Bobcat Stadium.
