Weakley’s Miracle Shot made to Sportscenter!
It is a very rare occasion that any school, team, or player is featured on ESPN as a highlight of the night. Therefore, we are glad to be a part of Frostburg State University (FSU) when this attention was received. We are sure that the Women’s Basketball team is even more ecstatic about the win of the night, morally as well as record-wise.
On Wednesday, February 15th, the FSU Women’s Basketball team hosted the West Liberty Hilltoppers. Coming into this game the Bobcats were zero-seven against the Hilltoppers in their last seven meetings. Also, in their last seven meetings, the Bobcats never scored over 65 points.
In the matchup Wednesday, the tone was set by guard Arianna Briggs-Hall. Briggs-Hall scored the first seven points giving FSU a six-point lead over the Hilltoppers within the first three minutes. By the time the first quarter ended, West Liberty was able to climb back into the game and lead by two, 25-23.
West Liberty led throughout the game, but what was different from times past was that FSU never lost their grip on the game. FSU was down single digits moving into each quarter. When the fourth quarter arrived, the bobcats did a great job of hitting shots when they counted. Emilee Weakley knew how to get to the rim all night, whether through a fast break or using her slashing ability to maneuver through defenders.
As the game was coming to an end, the Bobcats needed a miracle to send the game into overtime and put themselves in a position to win the game. On the faithful play, Briggs-Hall inbounds the ball making a great pass to Weakley past half court. Weakley catches the ball and as quickly as she can, with as much accuracy as she can, turns around and shoots the ball.
As the ball goes in, the team jumps up and crowds Weakley for the shot she just made. To the Hilltoppers, this may have been a sign that the day belonged to FSU. FSU went into OT with all the momentum and hope that they needed to emerge victorious against West Liberty.
Of course, Weakley’s incredible shot that sent the game into overtime was posted on social media. The video was enticing enough for ESPN’s late-night host Scott Van Pelt to feature it on SportsCenter.
This was a very exciting time for FSU, as well as the Women’s Basketball team, and they would like it to mean the beginning of finishing out the season strong. We look forward to what will come next season.
