Wild Things is Back in Business
After closing last July for renovations, Wild Things Restaurant and Bar has reopened its doors to the public once again. Having reopened on Friday, Nov 7, the restaurant is glad to be back in business. Located on 113 Main Street in downtown Frostburg, just across the street from Fat Boy’s Pizza, the restaurant has seen an increase in popularity since its renovations began last summer.
When first walking through the doors of Wild Things, customers are greeted with a warm sense of community. The bar itself rests on the right side of the wall, with four flat-screen televisions for customers to watch sports and other events on during the week. The kitchen used to be in a much closer proximity to where the bar and tables were, which has now been moved further back in the building. A DJ booth now resides where the kitchen used to be, behind the bar, with a pool table across from it. Tables and booths line the left side of the wall, and the front portion on the right side as well, welcoming families to the restaurant as well as the bar. They also have electrical outlets every 36 inches along the bar for phones and laptop use as well, catering to everyone’s needs. Since it’s reopening in early November, Wild Things now serves all ages, from families that come up on weekends with children of all ages, to the retired elderly who still love living in Frostburg. All ages are welcome.
Larry Guthrie is the owner of Wild Wings, and has been since it first opened, which will be five years this March. While talking with him, he seemed very pleased with how the revamped restaurant now looks. He explained that it had been five years, and thought it was time for a much-needed upgrade. Guthrie said that, “people get bored,” with the same stuff, and needed to be remodeled anyways. He explained that the restaurant used to have a drop ceiling, which he did not like from the start very much, and was happy when the restaurant was renovated. Wild Things originally closed for renovation on July 5 and was closed for four months. During the process, Guthrie said one of the main goals was that he wanted to serve to a more upscale crowd, which he believes has worked out, saying that the restaurant has, “the crowd we’re looking for.”
Guthrie is proud of not just the renovation of the restaurant, but the reworking of their menu as well. The Wild Things menu used to be six to seven pages, but since closing for renovations, they have made it into only one page, which is a lot more efficient for both the customers and the staff. While interviewing some customers, they all had great things to say about the food. One elderly couple said that the wings were especially good, which echoes with the restaurants award-winning pizzas and wings. Many of the customers said they had good appetizers and good food. Wild Things also has a variety of beers as well, including microbrews, which are beers that are produced locally and not nationally distributed, which makes the restaurant unique in itself. Wild Things also have diner delivery services as well, which have been a huge hit since they reopened.
When asked what some of their best-selling menu items were, the manager said that burgers and wedges are some of their most popular meals to date. Their appetizers are big during Happy Hour, and they have a variety of items on their menu, such as subs and side dishes as well. Wild Things is also happy to have a newly installed infrared chargrill in their kitchen, which helps to cook and grill their food in a more direct way. As would be expected, Wild Things busiest days are usually Thursdays through Sundays, especially when there is a big game on.
One thing that Guthrie is also proud of is the social network that Wild Things is attracting. He explained that the crowd is more upper scale now, which was a point of emphasis for him, and that they get some big names in the restaurant now. Guthrie said that the Mayor has been known to come in before, as well as other restaurant owners. Guthrie does not like to think that he has competition in other local restaurants, because he has been friends with many of them for a long time, but likes to think instead that they help boost each other’s popularity and business. Guthrie said he wanted to, “push for a cleaner, good feeling,” and spoke of the rebuilding process, saying, “I build it the way I wanted to build it.”
Guthrie is very proud of the way Wild Things has rebuilt itself now, and is looking forward to a bright future with the restaurant and its staff members. So if you are looking for a good place to eat, whether it be a meal or appetizer, with the family or by yourself, Wild Things is great place to go for both the food and its atmosphere.
